try arguing that you shouldn't put platinum in your car cause it runs too hot (turbo) or that they are giving you the wrong spark plug,  you need a (colder/hotter) one

That will get them too.

I go up to the counter and ask for 8 Autolite 764s. They proceed to ask what vehicle. I tell them again, I need 8 Autolite 764s, they again reply that they need the vehicle. I say, give me plugs, they say need vehicle info. I ask why, they say warranty. . . WTF? Warranty on a damn spark plug? Give them vehicle, they say, no, I need platinum. I ask why, they say because that's what their computer lists. I ask to see the screen, scroll down, and bingo. . . Autolite 764s @ $1.09/pc. Give them to me. They try to tell me I NEED platinum, I tell them to explain to me WHY I need platinum. They go on some stupid autostore BS knowledge. I school them and get my 764s.

I feel sorry for some of the people who actually take that job hoping to learn some automotive knowledge.

You wanna have a good time when you go get plugs?? When they tell you your car requires platinum plugs, ask them why they make copper plugs for them then? Then proceed to tell them that platinum plugs offer zero advantage unless you plan on not changing your plugs every year. They'll have a fit.

i already knew the part number of what i needed so it was really no hassle at all

with non-platinum plugs, it's really recomended to change them once a year?

I don't change plugs every year...partly because it's an exercise in frustration just trying to get to them. Have to change them from *inside* the cab...

Only van I ever liked to work on was my mother's old Aerostar. The 4.0 had great access in that thing with the low floor. Typical full size vans are teh suxor!

Yes. Platinum is acutally a very poor conductor and there are far better performance characteristics from a standard copper plug. The ONLY advantage to platinum is durability. It allows for a much longer lifespan due to better corrosion resistance and better durability with long term heat.

Actually, this is not commonly known, but you should really replace your plug wires everytime you change plugs. Plug wires will start to deteriorate around 10,000 miles or less.

That is something I do...once again, because it's such a PITA to get everything exposed, might as well do as much as you can while you're there.

But it's probably been 20k since I've touched either the plugs or the wires...might have to change the distributor cap the next time I do it as that hasn't been touched in a while too.

I do it for all my own vehicles, but I'm a little anal on maintenance. I do a tuneup once a year, and that's all tuneup related, so voila. Plugs, wires, cap and rotor if applicable, fuel filter, air filter, oil change, tranny fluid change, gear lube change, coolant change, etc.

I do it for all my own vehicles, but I'm a little anal on maintenance. I do a tuneup once a year, and that's all tuneup related, so voila. Plugs, wires, cap and rotor if applicable, fuel filter, air filter, oil change, tranny fluid change, gear lube change, coolant change, etc.

the opti on LT1s is a pain in the ass, you have to take the water pump off to get to it

i'll try not to let this set of plugs/wires go too long though
