You can't do espresso on my french press, the fine grindings get caught in the mesh, and I'm not into the espresso anyways.

Exactly, and fortunately we can get away with a cheaper grinder without the need for espresso fine grinds.

I remember when I purchased my electric drill. That thing was stupid expensive, but I wanted it. My FIL purchased a craftsman for a bit more than half the price. Another buddy got a cheaper Dewalt.

They pissed me off so bad giving me shit about the cost of that damn drill. Well, in addition to being able to give more torque and having better settings, theirs both broke down on them this year. I got vindicated!

Then they buy the exact same model as before with a total investment less than yours, and the new one doesn't break. That would be ironic. :P

I hear ya though. I was super adamant about not spending a lot on glass, and some assholes kept telling me it was worth the investment. Well it turns out they were right.

Nem, I am sure you can do this. My in laws have had 3 remote starters installed from their completely, totally incompetent local car audio shop and have had no problems at all over that last few years. These tools have absolutely no clue what the hell they're doing and they didn't mess up the remoter starters. Example 1- in my original install the LOC wasn't wired correctly- switched the positive and negatives on one of rear channels and these fools couldn't even find that out. Example 2- they didn't even bother to use the "weather stripping" type tape on the mid of the component system to seal it to their adapter plate- which didn't even fit well. You can do it, no problems.

Thanks for the encouragement. :)

I think that is more the issue. Unless you knew espresso is actually uniform sized grains how would you know?

And I told Sean it sounded retarded to spend that much on a grinder too because i didnt know better. :-D

With the nespresso unit I don't have to think about it though. Really great gift for me. The 600 bucks on grinder and machine will buy me a lot of pods into the future!

Perhaps if I was an avid coffee drinker, and tried different grinders than I'd see the justification, but it just seems asinine to spend that much on something relatively simple.

Now I get it. Look up burr grinders.

They are not the same as the little spinning blade units that you are thinking of. Without that level of even grinding espresso isn't espresso.

Motherfucker.

To my defense I never thought of espresso. In fact I typed out expresso, and then noticed spell-check said I'm an idiot.

Ha!

I actually got into a heated debate with someone about cheap glass recently. They are a much better shooter than me also. And have what we would call garbage equipment.

If a $150 dollar scope does it for you, the rock on. He doesn't care when he busts it. Has like 6 laying around. Shoots minuite of deer all day long at any distance the 30-06 or 300wm goes.

Different strokes. He also hopped into a truck he was making payments on and rented an apartment. People will do what they will do. And if I have learned ANYTHING it is that the best reason to do something or make a certain decision after you have the info, is because you want to.

That tall bastard also STOLE a sweet grinder from CL or ebay.

Mazzer super Joy I think was the name.

Jelly. If I ground my own beans I would probably drink about 2 times as much. Might be able to kick the energy drink habit too.

Sean might even buy his own beans then roast them locally too. I don't remember if that was him who does that. So good.

Good point.

Cheeper than blow too! And you can get fair trade. Try and get good working conditions from the cartels.

Tsk tsk tsk.

Won a coffee basket at my daughter's art school fundraiser, finally got a french press. I'm liking it, now to get a grinder and start grinding my own beans.

You are going to puke at the price of real grinders. Hard to find anything worth a shit under $250

Only an idiot would spend $250 on a coffee grinder, and I don't care how "good" it is--that's ridiculous.

That's for a shitty one.

Really hard to get an even grind without it, and without an even grind you don't get your espresso.

Maybe one of those hand crank turkish style could. But I don't know.

Good hand grinders are more than $150

Drip isn't the same as espresso or french press coffee.

The reason espresso is what it is, is because of an even grind.

It effects ALL coffee.

Grinder is to coffee what installation is to car audio.

What is asinine or idiotic is spending $2+ a day at the local coffee shop.

And you can't get any sort of texture or mouth feel in a french press without a conical burr grinder. Typically that means > 1/4hp and if the burrs are less than 30mm across the grind is pretty much useless.

And the cheap grinder to good grinder is even more of a difference then in glass.

On that note, I've been leaning towards purchasing one of these for my grinding needs.

https://www.lehmans....e-grinders.aspx

Check out Home Barista and Coffee Geek forums to see real reviews. I haven't heard of that, but there is an $800 grinder sitting on my counter. I've got a $400 one in a box that I am ebaying as well since it makes a terrible cup in comparison. Absolute horseshit when tasted side by side.

So here's the breakdown. I used to be able to walk to a Dunn Bros. Went 1-3x a day. $2-4 a pop.

Over the past 8 years, I've spent about $2200 on coffee making equipment. $300 I should get back, net otd $1900. Here's a math question for you. Was I an idiot for spending nearly $2k on coffee gear?

I've yet to enjoy coffee. peepwall.gif

That is what happens when you use a shitty grinder.
