Basically, I want to compare "signatures" in a way

Background: I have 7 vehicles that I record engine parameters for; I want to test each vehicle's distribution of engine speed to ensure that they are all close enough to the average so that I can assume running 1 analysis on the average is comparable to running the analysis on each vehicle individually.

What are you recording and what time interval and how is the data stored?

I record engine speed and any other basic parameter you can think of. I plan on only testing the engine speed and calling it good enough. The data is recorded every second, but I'm looking to show that the way the engines run average out to be the "same" overall.

Ok, a friend at work has a '07 F150 4.2L - 2WD and is considering some more performance upgrades. I started to do some searching around yesterday, and I thought to myself, 'Ryan would be much better at this'. So he currently has a cat-back exhaust and I think is considering ignition and intake upgrades. Thoughts sir?

The left is the engine speed distribution of a single vehicle in my study. the right is the distribution of all the engine speeds for all the vehicles. I want to compare the distribution to say that it is statistically similar so studying the overall distribution instead of studying 7 individual vehicles will produce the same results with less work.

Define your bins (cant' tell from your pic) in a column in Excel and then use and IF and Count statement to determine each. You could also make a quick pivot table to do it as well.

No go in excel, it's not too friendly with 3,000,000 data points. however I use JMP and have all the counts for all the distributions (that's how I made the graphs in another program)

However, I think I found another way around it to make me feel comfortable with the data.

Can always do the same in Matlab.

Since you have the counts already though you don't need it. The real question then becomes how do you compare the distribution and what will be the factors that determine a match or difference.

I start by normalizing the data most likely. Percentage of total time is a good start and usually how the marine manufacturers do it.

Sell the truck and buy something else. Really, the amount of money it would take to notice anything would be pointless. Even with a full port, cam,intake, exhaust and tune, he'd be lucky to see 40 horse. I'd boost and tune and go from there, but nobody makes a kit for the 4.2, so he'd have to fab something.

I know that, but it's just throwing money away. The ignition will do nothing. Ford has awesome stock ignition systems. in factory form, it will easily support triple his factory ratings for power. The intake will net him a few if he's lucky. I'd go for a custom tune myself. That will get him the most. He can order a programmer and a generic tune for less money as well and get pretty good results.

What is the goal of this? I can record and upload several live data parameters of any cars you might be interested in. I could provide live data feeds, or screen shots that include graphed parameters if you can't get live feeds. Any recorded information by the ECU I can provide. My new scanner is really a serious piece of equipment.
