Well got something to rebuild.

GM 5.0 block number 14102058

Heads numbered (I think) 14102187

Guy claimed its seized up, but I am not too sure he knew what he was talking about.

And for the price its worth working on and learning on.

HO 305 with the big valve heads ?? will the block turn at all ???

The HO 305 in my Camaro was a mean engine ... 305 block bored out 30 over with made it similar to the 327, but in a 4 bolt main ...

add the big valved heads, then you got a similar to a mildly built 5.7 350 ... Then start modifing from there ... one mean smallblock !!!

Well, that was back then in the early 90s ... I'm sure there are more updates, tricks, and tips one can do to those things these days ...

If I ever call it quits on this stereo in my truck, I'd like to tackle that 5.7 vortek 350 in it and just see what we could come up with ...

I don't think I'd screw around with something like an older 305 or 350, just opt for dropping a LT1/LS1 or 5.3L out of a wrecked car or truck.

guess thats what makes us old hotrodders different now adays ... Back then, we built our own performance ... and you wouldn't even get a good drag race with everyone knowing you just "bought" something and brought it out to the track or late night street track (where ever that might be in the city) ...

but yes, those would be some powerful engines ... but changing all the motor mounts and matching up to the older transmissions would be fun ...

I wouldn't exactly call the work into dropping a wrecked engine/tranny into an older car 'buying' something, but to each their own. :)

I may be a Cable Guy, but I've worked with my dad in the Auto mechanic / paint and body realm for years ...

hell, we got to rebuild the suspension under my truck this weekend ... you can bet I didn't buy used parts for that ...

Buying motors out of a junkyard is a chance just like buying a amp from a pawn shop ... not sure if its going to last ten yeras or ten days ...

If you are building a hotrod for someone else, that may be fine to you ... but it would suck if the ride was brought back with engine problems (see this all the time in the mechanic world)

If you build a hotrod for yourself ... I would bet you would like to know EXACTLY whats under the hood of your ride when you make a challenge for a money race ... or in my case, I only raced for beers, that way (if I lost) i'd still get to drink a few and not be fighting about money ... :drink40:

We were out racing one night, this guy hit me up for a race ... I challenged him to a case of beer (thats all I had) ...

We knew he was faster than me, and all he (Said) he hda was a hunderd dollar bill ... WTF ... we made the bet, he really wanted to race me ...

wouldn't you know it, we raced, he spun out at the start and could not catch me ... I thought, Hell, got me a hunderd dollars ...

he was honest, went to pull out the money, and did not have it ... not even 20 dollars ... Things got hectic ... After it was all said and done, he had no choice, give me his car or I take his girlfriend home that night ... guess he cared more about his car than his girlfriend ... lol She was fine too !!!

What a night ... I miss being wild a nd single ...

$50 isn't bad. Nothing necessarily horrible about it, but if it's seized, you may find you just spent $50 for a paper weight. Of course, it should scrap for around $70, so you could make some money. Seized or internally broken engines are a 50/50 proposition. You might get it torn apart and find you can't remove a piston or a rod has scraped a cylinder wall and it's too deep to be machined, etc. . . . Then you can't do anything with it aside from scrap it.

A 305 .30 over is a 310. That's no where near a 327. Add the "big valve" heads and you have nothing more than a top end scream machine. You still wouldn't have the torque or power you would have started off with in the 350 unless you also stroked it and did some major head and cam work.

Junkyards are sophisticated these days. Most pull all the parts themselves due to liability issues. They test everything before they pull it, so you know it works. They also include warranties in case the parts don't work. U-pick places will also carry a warranty, but usually only a couple weeks to a month, but even they will mark on it whether it runs, has keys, etc. Anyone who goes to a junk yard for an engine is smart enough to make sure they aren't getting a worthless engine. It's pretty simple to check for compression, oil pressure, and even get it running with a battery and come ether.

Sorry, my idea of similar is far closer.

would you get one of these for your own personal hotrod ... I'm not talking about a everyday drive back and forth to school / work car or truck ...

Jordan, if you REALLY want to make it fast and reliable, you need a REAL heart transplant in the shape of an oval.

Sure. I already have. The past two daily drivers I've had I purchased with blown engines and then went to the yard and got some transplants, and you need a daily driver to be more reliable than a hot rod. It's nothing like it was 10-20 years ago when they just bought cars and threw them in the yard. I currently have a couple engines sitting in my old man's barn for some projects as well.

The internet and boom in computers has allowed them to modernize, increase efficiency, and cut back on overhead. Even the "dirty" businesses are cleaning up and realizing the value of modernization.

MY dad runs a scrap yard and you would think it would be a nasty, dirty business, and while on the surface, at the yard, it is, it is also BIG MONEY and they have to keep exacting control of inventory and finances just like a bank.
