My dad is looking into getting a new desktop. Our family is big fans of Dell and I'm sure that's what he'll be getting.

I was looking at processors and noticed an Intel® Core™ i5-650 processor(4MB Cache, 3.20GHz) is much less than the Intel® Core™ i5-750 processor(8MB Cache, 2.66GHz)

Can someone explain the cache to me and why is makes such a big difference?

Also looked at a comp with AMD Athlon™ II X4 Processor 630 (2.8GHz, 2M, 4C)

Anyone know how the AMD compares to the i3 and i5?

Go intel right now. AMD has nothing to offer most users.

Have someone build you the computer. I know you guys like dells, but the only thing good about them to me is the fact you can by insurance and get free replacements every month if you pay the insurance. You will save truck loads of cash and have something that is expandable and better working long and short term.

Adrian or someone can explain this better but cache is to your processor what ram is to your whole PC. It's the fast access memory storage that your processor holds while doing the math you're asking it to do. So a big cache can help ease the burdon of your CPU having to ask more frequently info from the RAM or HDD etc. It's way more complex and depending on what lvl cache it is makes a speed difference. Sometimes the cache also houses a fast look up table for really complex but really common math problems. I think if I remember right it's mainly LONG drawn out matricies that are used in common computing. So you can save a few hundred clock cycles everytime that specific matrix comes up.

So..... pragmatically....... What do you want the computer to do what's the budget, and are you willing to try.... DIY?

Maybe it's because I grew up around all the turbo rice car when I was a kid but I can't get enough. Something about the way it turns waste energy into productive energy it just awesome to me.

The machine Sean2 built me with me 28" hans G and keyboard mouse case everything would have been 3 times the cost for tower only from dell. And it would have been slower. Even alienware/dell couldn't match the speed.

Where should I shop for good computer parts.

My dad basically uses the computer for surfing the net and email, so he doesn't need spectacular video cards and all that, but I want him to have something that will last a while. (Our current PC is at least 6 years old)

NewEgg.com has been nothing short of excellent in the 7+ years I've been using them.

As far as something that will last a while loading up on RAM helps in that area tremendously.

a quad core i5 Lynnfield, Intel H55 motherboard, 4GB of RAM, and a half-ass vid card will set you back about 400-500 or so; plenty of oomph

from the sounds of it something running a 64 bit OS with a good chunk of RAM and you should be set. I garuntee my quad core would be more than enough for his needs, but since the I cores are out you could get an i3 or i5. Sean just slapped together something pretty good for real real cheep recently I know. I think he used an i3.

Does the size of the case matter? You could just use the old case and same some $$ though. What do you think the budget is?
