OMFG. I had a class on GDI (gasoline direct injection) over the last couple nights. This is supposed to be the next big thing in the automotive industry. Since diesel, hydrogen powered, high volt systems, battery powered cars and hybrid cars have been utter failures they decided to try a different route.

From a diagnostic standpoint these cars are total nightmares. Some run on standard port fuel and GDI injection systems determining which system is at fault looks like a cluster fuck. From a mechanical repair standpoint it is frightening. Running at 1600-2400PSI the danger to the technician is downright scary. The possibility of having a liquid amputation or having a poison shot directly into the bloodstream are things we don't want to deal with. Not only that, but the new tooling required for testing pressures, R&R of injectors, and cleaning of the carbon deposits that are prevalent in these systems is outrageous.

A paying customer will bear tremendous burdens for simple repairs. A simple valve cover gasket job will add a ton of labor because of the requirement of the removal of the high pressure pump and associated components is time consuming and very precision work. Also the added cost of the required replacement of the high pressure fuel lines (they MUST be replaced with each R&R of the component) is gonna kick a wallet's ass. Carbon fouling is proving to be the big issue with these systems. Intake valve fouling, tumble valve fouling and cylinder fouling is, at this point, uncontrollable. Buildup is causing misfires and lack of power concerns. It is not uncommon for a car with under 30K to have massive fouling that is giving the service technician several hours of R&R for cleaning. Intake R&R and scrub downs are the easy ones, but many Audis are having to actually have the heads removed to clean the fouling. Camshaft lobes are being destroyed by the high pressure pump (which is mechanical and driven off a camshaft lobe), requiring camshaft replacement. VW/Audi seem to be the biggest manufacturer with issues.

Right now the manufacturers using these systems are GM, Hyundai, VW/Audi and Toyota. Be wary of these cars as the costs of maintenance and repair is huge... and the do break early and often.

The class was extensive, so if anyone has any questions I should be able to answer them if you are interested. The instructor is also a good friend of mine, and an owner of a mobile diagnostic business with a lot of hands on. I can call him for any info on input I cannot provide.

Same high pressures and high risks in a diesel and even higher pressures in a commonrail diesel...

Sean, you had the original JBL GTI 15's, can you recommend an enclosure ? I need to shoehorn 2 of them in a Z3 coupe.

First gens' with the folded surround? Basically a pro audio driver so shoehorning into a Z3 really isn't going to happen.

Yeah, 1500gti.

As far as I could tell and simulate, I can fit a 5 cube sealed box, which should yield a qtc of 0.65 with 2 1500 gti's

It's a Z3 coupe smile.png

They really like ported. And don't expect a fat bottom end, but output you will have. Almost ran mine in the boat...but just couldn't kill it that way.

I sure hope I can fit two. Otherwise I will just convince the customer to go with 1.

I loath Kansas. I had nothing but bad luck there when I drove throught it. Similar with Billings Montana. Just more annoying and less life threatening.

Should stop by Manhattan and eye the college women.

Other than that... not much here.

My four day stop there a few years ago that's all I saw to do too.

J

If its been a few years you might be surprised how much Manhattan has tried to expand and grow, they have delusions of grandeur. Still the same ole stuff though.

What's wrong with so many eggs in pan?

I just throw a ton in, but I also scramble them.

Not a gourmet chef. :D

Yay! Just finished my application for Nissan Technical Center North America!

God I need a job.Good, maybe you can help improve the quality and reliability for them.

Perhaps, but I doubt that at this stage in my career that anything of that magnitude will be possible. They are definitely not my first choice of employer, but since I'm in the position I got myself in I'll take whatever I can get.

Also applying to Ford, Chrysler, GM, Oshkosh, Harmon, and several branches of the Department of Defense. But none of them seemed excited about me so I'm not as hopefull for them as I am for Nissan.

Oh sweet Oshkosh. Could you hook my son up with overall's? wink.png

I'll be sure to include the request in my application ;)

Unfortunately, the representatives they sent were pretentious ass-hats.

You eat mercury fish out of a can...why would I expect any less.

If you scramble them I'd personally do it before they hit the pan. As for a ton in, the general rule of thumb for anything (that isn't uber thin) is to never fill a pan. Without space around the food things stick, don't brown, need more oil and so on. That pan is big enough for 2-3 sunny sides.

Yeah I scramble before putting on pan.

Tuna has more selenium than mercury, its fine.

The comment wasn't on the nutritional valour but the flavor

Well mercury doesn't have much to do with flavor.

But I do admit I often eat some pretty bland shit, and im a terrible cook. :)

Can I ask why you feel diesel has been a failure?

Sales figures ;)

Great....

Do you know anything about the Mazda/Ford system yet?

Yes. We did discuss the twin turbo GDI system. They got away from their troublesome MAF sensors. On the twin turbo system they use 3 IAT/MAP sensors. Yeah, that makes sense. One on the inlet pipe (before the compressor) one after the intercooler in the pressure pipe, and one in the intake manifold. It allows them to determine if there are leaks in the system. SO now they have reverted to an old speed density system, but I believe I get the "why". It really limits what can be done in the aftermarket with regards to performance mods. They use a VVT system on the intake camshaft. They do suffer the carbon fouling we see on all the others (aside from Toyota, who uses port fuel injectors that spray on the intake valves and help keep them clean), but the camshafts are not getting galled like the VW/Audi. Most of the other manufacturers are using roller lifters instead of solid lifters. This wouldn't be a big issue if motor oil still had the zinc in it that they should have.

Same high pressures and high risks in a diesel and even higher pressures in a commonrail diesel...

Yeah, but we are not diesel or common rail mechanics. To us, high pressure systems are the 72PSI multiport injection on the GM Vortecs.

A big issue is that while I go to every school I possibly can to stay on the top of my field, most guys won't spend an hour in a classroom in a year. As sad as that is, it is the truth. 95% of mechanics are getting left behind by the technologies that are being developed today. They are nuts and bolts guys, and nuts and bolts are fading away. These guys are going to jump in and start tearing a valve cover off without knowing what they are getting into, and they will get hurt.

That might be good. I was in the state the day after a white out. No windshield fluid in the fucking state. I had florida fluid in the uhaul I was pushin home.

I got pushed off the turnpike that cuts through and had to take other roads. Whe I pulled over I got directed west. I needed east. OMG. Adeed 9 hous to my trip. It could have happened anywhrre....... ut it HAPPENED in Kansas to me.
