At 86k I change the front and reaf diff and the transfercase on the 4runner and the oil was very nice and golden. Very little on the drain plug magnets. I was rather suprised because when I did the F150 is was holy shit bad at 60k.

Ford uses a friction modifier and it basically makes the fluid look like liquid graphite. Makes it difficult to distinguigh clean from dirty fluid.

The modifier is clear. That is the clutch material, and it is common in any positraction differential. The 4 runner is a 2 runner and it uses 2 peglegs with no clutches, hence no clutch material.

As little as I think of Fords they tend to do rear ends right. Their Exploder independent suspension diffs blow goats, but fixed axles are solid.

I have 3 bottles that are dark gray and look like liquid graphite.

Odd. I always use the GM modifier, which is clear. All the modifiers I have ever seen are clear. And I do, and have done, all the diff builds in the shops I have worked in for the last 13 years or so (it seems to be a dying art), so it isn't like it is a rarity for me to be in an ass end.

But I'll take your word for it. I have never used Ford's modifier so I can't speak from direct personal experiance.

The Motorcraft stuff is all I've used, so I've never seen any of the others.

Speaking of repairs, my truck needs its oil changed and to go to the body shop on tuesday.

Then the wife's truck keeps having battery issues (Got a cheap as shit one when we got back a lil over a year ago and have already replaced it once. And it needs we tires (close to the wear bars on the mud tires) and the brakes and rotors need replaced.

And my firebird............my lovely needs fucking door panels firebird. We re-did the horn wiring and its still fucking up. Won't run quite right. Throws on a SES code after about 10 minutes but the guages are in a normal range. Occasional issues starting back up once shut off too (as in it doesn't quite want to start....a couple pedal pumps and its fine). My guess is it could use a new fuel pump. As well as me getting off my ass and putting in new window seals.

So I'm headed on a big road trip for work. I was thinking about listening to some ebook on the trip. Anyone got anything interesting?

Gotcha. They should not say they rotated the tires (the tech will have been paid warranty rate for that too) if they hadn't.

Yea it is a matter of honesty. Just a run down of a previous issue. My 4runner was in for a heater control issue, they fixed it great, BUT when they were backing it off the lift they cut one of the rear tires. They did replace it with a brand new tire, great.

Problem was when I called them ofter I saw the new tire to ask them, I was told what happened and they replaced it and they figured I would have never noticed and that is why it was not on the sheet I received.

That is one of those grey areas. I know what you mean about honesty, but sometimes it can bite us in the ass. I'll give you a real world example.

As the shop foreman I recieve an hourly rate and a bonus schedule based on cars out and customer satisfaction surveys. I am bonused on these surveys at 93%, 97% and 100% positive, and the difference in bonuses is pretty significant. My service writer and manager are also bonused similarly. Survey calls are random and varied... from 20 to 50 calls a month, so each call is HUGE.

One month we were running smooth with 100% CSS and we did a simple oil change on a car. 3 days later the lady came back and said her car sounded like a race car. So we pulled it in and it was loud as hell. Apparently the tech left the oil cap loose and it came off. It was loud, and had sprayed ~1/2 quart of oil around under the hood. We cleaned it up, put on a new oil cap, bought the lady some Bajangles breakfast, washed her car, and decided to be honest with her rather than bullshit her.

Guess who dinged us on a survey? Guess who cost me $500 in bonus? We could have hidden the whole deal and said she had run over a plastic bag or something, but we chose to be honest.

So I hate to say this, but when we deal with customers we tend wo weigh how we are going to deal with them. Generally if it is a drivability customer I will interview them, so the service writer and myself both get an idea of the type of person we are dealing with. First time customers will meet the service manager and service writer, and they will get an idea of who we are dealing with. But we develop an individual plan of how we deal with each customer based on our interactions. Some people will never be happy no matter how honest you are with them. Those are the people you leave in the dark as much as possible

When I bought this car I was right upfront with them about my previous dealing. So during the selling process and and paying they wrote me up a little piece of mind that this would never happen here.

Honesty is my number 1 in life and I understand how things work and how the surveys can affect things.

Salesmen will say anything to sell a car ;).

Again, I am not defending the service department, just sharing some of my personal observations as one of the guys on the other side of that line. I prefer honesty as well, but when it cost me $500, I started to question the value of my integrity.

Your integrity is valued on honesty and principles. What you did in that situtation was the right thing no matter the $$ loss. Nobody likes to loose money, but doing the right thing is what matters the most.

Huge huge clean up day. It sucks because I'm going to have to undo a lot of the cleaning..... I'm still not done sanding the drywall etc etc.

We have massively uncluttered though. The house will be nice enough to have some out of towners come through. I'm embarrassed it's taken so long and it's sad shape... but the amount of work done in just a week or so is fantastic.

My company has Cintas wash our work clothes every week, and they too are dickies or something similar. I must of placed it in there on accident

Even if they don't throw it away, you'll never see it again. Once they get off the truck and into sorting, they will only do items that are tagged. There is no way to keep track of untagged items and they get thrown away or used as rags.

No way they will know who's shirt it is. Your Cintas rep didn't catch that? Our guy always goes through our unis and tossed our personal clothes aside for us.

Bummer.

as long as he has insurance coverage...

Also, just install things in such a way as to where they are not easily removed...

IE- false floor over batts, Bolt box down from the inside, install amps in such a way to where the whole cargo area needs to be removed to get it out.

I'm used to squeezing every little bit of equipment in my car so when it's all said and done.. i could have my doors open and still take quite a while just to get anything out.

In my boat the drivers seat needs to come out to get at the sub. And you need "special" tools to do so. I made sure of that when I put it back in. Same with the amps. Real unusual security screw extension required. Good luck.

If they get stolen someone will do some serious damage to the fiberglass and boat interior which to me is better. I'd rather make a $10k claim than a $1k claim.

Driving the boat with the sub full bore is interesting. Shuts off the engine, lol.

With Japan’s defeat on Thursday, the U.S. women’s team won the Olympic gold medal for the fourth consecutive time. And while the players held mutual respect for each other, and congratulated each other at the end on a game well-played, some disappointing American “fans” on Twitter did not behave the same.

And the best worst part of all? This all took place on August 9th, or, the 67th anniversary of the Nagasaki bombing.
