Flood in Thailand last year sent hard drive prices into orbit. They're still there last I checked.

And laptop drives are all glass substrate based. Market covered by Asahi, Konica Minolta, and Hoya. And you guessed it, pretty much ALL of their production went underwater. Asahi still isn't producing and I don't think any of the other Thai plants are back up. Add to it the mess in Japan and that only left Hoya's Vietnam plant operating which sort of puts glass substrates in high demand.

And of course, any idea where final assembly for many of these are/were? You got it.

Yeeesh, any of the companies throwing out ETA's for reopening their Thai plants yet or are they still cleaning up?

Depends on what you define as open. Will take years to get back to the same quantity capability. Insurance is funny in Thailand as well. Flood insurance works ONCE. Do you then rebuild there?

Asahi may actually completely step out of the glass business. It is definitely interesting, starting to see available capital from the insurance settlements, but it is happening really slowly and no one knows exactly what to use it for. Much of the plants were slightly antiquated which of course in the data storage industry could only mean a couple years old, but today's technology is rapidly becoming different. Complete head technology is changing and that will alter the whole development and production cycle. Read up on HAMR if you like (heat assisted magnetic recording) as that is the next frontier since Discrete Track failed miserably.

Thanks guys! I had a dream I was given and Enzo. I'd rather have a 458, but it was a good dream.

You could always sell the Enzo and buy a 458 with some money left over.

Or sell it and do something else altogether. After of course beating the shit out of it!

If they are getting out of the glass business, tell them to send it back to State College PA. They bought Corning out and shut down operations a few years back.

Wow, I thought it was only a minor disruption in production, not a full blown catastrophe.

Aaron, the mobile site is working great. Can I give you money for a dark mobile skin? It would look better and save my battery :)

Of course I could always just use the full version, but what's the fun in that? Lol

Edit: actually when doing the full version it pops out the SSA facebook thing when scrolling to the left. Which is really just a minor annoyance.

I get the adds on the main page, but not while reading a thread. Takes 1/3 of the screen. I can block them no problem, but the space is just left blank...

I know several people who worked there and some who still work there. I just want them to open their doors back up here in hopes they will leave my company and go back there.

I have ZERO issues with the board update. I think the issues are user-error.

The issues stem comes from many sources. Some people could have only one, others (like me) have many. Off the top of my head I can think of three things. 1.) Slow connection2.) Old computer3.) Firefox/Java issues. Oracle is not pushing Java updates quickly enough to keep up with the Firefox rapid release schedule (new version every 6 weeks) and so users Firefox 5, 6, 7, or 8 usually have more Java related issues. Firefox versions 9 and up supposedly "fixed" this issue and for the most part I haven't had issues (running 10.0.1 currently).

The fact of the matter is that Java is a bloated mess and for users with slow connections and/or older hardware browsing the forums is much faster with Java disabled. However, there is no way to disable Java on a site by site basis with Firefox; it's all or none. Using an extension like NoScript allows you to disable Java on a site by site basis which is preferred because countless web designers make sites that are completely dependent on Java; you can't even access the site without Java enabled.
