GODDAMNIT you had a conversation about the Merkur XR4Ti with out me!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am the resident Merkur expert, anway, it was my first car I ever owned (saved my life in a really bad wreck in 1995) I later bought a silver one for a past girlfriend..

the 2.3 is a potent motor as previously mentioned, the iron block can take pretty much what ever you throw at it, (not sure but I believe it was sourced from the Pinto)

I have seen via Merkur groups out on the west coast guys running upwards of 20 psi on the stock block, the body is very rigid from what I remember and with a little under chassis cross supports I can imagine it to be M3 stiff,

not to mention that it was naturally, because of its design and RWD and usage of Aluminum in the chassis, it was a very good handeling rig, with small adjustments they could be better than my current sled (heavy SOB)

they did have a fair amount of electrical problems, and many customers ditched their cars early because they felt the turbo went up when the entire time it was only the pressure release valve which was faulty from the factory,

they are a great car for SPL due to the massive hatch area and expansive rear glass, making it easy to drop in something of retarted dimensions, I know that the autos were a little on the weak side, not to mention that the autos were only 3 speeds, yes thats right 3 speeds, (I believe that was changed in the 88's and 89's but not positive, along with the dula wing being dropped for a single less noticable single)

the little problems were sorta worked out by the last two years of the model's run here in the USA, (it carried on as the Ford Serria in europe) but at that point Ford had felt they had sunk enough money into the project and were not seeing enough returns on it,

they should have never sold it at the Lincolin Mercury dealerships, and they should have pushed the "sporting" aspect of the Merkur line (only two cars being brought, the other being a 4 door sedan with an anemic V6) I mean damn this was the second coming of the attempt that Ford had for a European designed coupe and sedan, (an idea a decade ahead of its time) I am not saying its the second comming of the Detamaso Pantera (that being Italian inspired) just for the Regan years and gas crisis age, but it was the second attempt and I think they failed in the marketing and sales miserablly,

if you need performance parts for the car, Rapido Group is the place to go, they carry everything, with the Intercooler kit, Borla dual Exhaust, Tokico shocks, HI Flo Head, turbo timer etc. that car (which can be found for about 2k in decent shape) could have a damn good chance of running down much newer cars,

If you remember back to a slightly less known car, the XR4Ti's direct competition was Chrysler's Conquest, a Mitsubishi rebadge, it was also a 4 pot turbo doing in the 175-188hp range, but it was much heavier than the Merkur and sold even less copies,

I have always wanted to buy another Black Merkur XR4ti and make a track car out of it, for the money and potential it is really hard to beat.
