I wouldn't give him anymore dang rides, but he's tried to get his liscence 2 times now and failed.

I'm trying to encourage good behavior..... Sometimes he's like having a teenager who pays rent.

Randomly thinking aloud:

E55 states "premium gas only" to be used; I assume that means 91 octane or better?

Does 90 octane sound like "premium" gas?

Think I could use 90 octane on a regular basis without destroying the engine?

I have no doubt that it'll run on 87 octane, just won't have the same power.

without knocking or detonation??

you can use any octane without "hurting" the engine. You will just get poor performance. If you are really concerned perhaps an octane booster pluss the near 91 octane would work to get the octane value you need.

I'm sure it'll make it richer/retard the timing with lower octane. My grandparents ran a older Nortstar (10.5:1, asks for 91 octane) on 87 octane for probably 70k miles with zero problems.

Today's computer systems are designed to eliminate spark knock/pinging/pre-ignition. Not only is it a detriment to the vehicle's motor life, but it also creates excessive HC emissions as well as spikes in NOx, and it can shorten catalytic converter life. The ECU system uses a knock sensor which quickly detects pinging and will retard the timing, and/or in some cases will open the EGR more then typically mapped for the situation. In all these cases there will be a reduction in power, and a decrease in fuel economy.

What I have found is that with today's cars the cost/mile ratio works out to be about the same when you select different grades of gasoline. What I mean is, if you put $20 of low octane gas in the car and typically get 200 miles on it, you will find that you get 200 miles on $20 of high octane fuel as well. So there is really no savings by putting in low octane gas.

As a disclaimer, I am a 30 year technician with my ASE and AC Delco master certifications.

I have ran 5 tanks of regular through my truck, and then 5 of premium. I get better mileage on premium by a bit. I get even better if I buy regular and use an additive(octane booster mix or just lucas oil product). I have yet to try several tanks of premium with a boster product.

On my car, I get about 2mpg increase from running 91 octane over 87 octane which pays for the increase in fuel price, but no more. I run 91 on road trips, and 87 when in town, but it really makes no real difference.

All you are doing is increasing the chance of engine knock, but the knock retard (KR) sensor will kick in and reduce your timing therefore reducing your overall power and gas mileage.

IMO if you love to get on it keep throwing in the premium. If you know you'll be just cruising it 87 will be fine.

If I'm' not mistaken Travis' Maxima gets a pretty decent jump in MPG when going from 87 to mid-grade so you might want to keep and eye on it to see if its justifiable.

Has anyone read The Men's Health Hard Body Plan? I mentioned it in my thread but I wanted to mention it here too. Everything I've read in it really seems to go along with what the Captain has told me, What Dem Beats has told me (who's name has completely slipped me right now, Sean2?) and just what I've read in general. It also seems to be right up the alley of what I am trying to do for myself.
