while I know nothing about those items individually I have had great luck with my asus mobo. Almost all the better builds my buddy does for others he finds those to be the best option and often a value price.

check with your school too MK. My wife gets OS software and MS word for like 5% of retail cost. Big savings then.

And make SURE. Absolutely sure you get 64 bit. Then you can actually use all the ram you will end up buying.

Where should I shop for good computer parts.

My dad basically uses the computer for surfing the net and email, so he doesn't need spectacular video cards and all that, but I want him to have something that will last a while. (Our current PC is at least 6 years old)

from the sounds of it something running a 64 bit OS with a good chunk of RAM and you should be set. I garuntee my quad core would be more than enough for his needs, but since the I cores are out you could get an i3 or i5. Sean just slapped together something pretty good for real real cheep recently I know. I think he used an i3.

Does the size of the case matter? You could just use the old case and same some $ though. What do you think the budget is?

Size of the case doesn't matter. For budget I'll say $600. I will also have to buy an OS. Should I go Win7 or stick with XP?

What do I need to look for in a case? I saw this combo on new egg that looks pretty good.

Very similar to what I just built. I have the 750 with the Asus P755D EVO motherboard and I love it.

600$ is too much for a PC that is only going to be browsing, checking emails, watching movies and other easy tasks. I have a dual core E4500, 2 gigs of ram, some decent mobo, some decent PSU and that's it. Perfect for everything your father will be doing. For 600$ I can build myself super fast gaming setup... If you have a friend who is into PC's maybe he can hook you up with something custom made and cheap.

And go with Windows 7, I am happy with it. And didn't pay for it too. DL for free.

Help MK out. I honestly think a quad core from my machine which would be cheep would be enough, but if the price for that mobo and processor are that cheep I think it's worth it considering 5 years down the road when you need a boost it could be OCed or just upgraded.

That will do many thing more than browse and can be good for many years(performance wise).

depending on price of windows 7 for KM that last one might be work a look.

I have personally used the Atom systems though.... I wouldn't want to browse on them. Plus the extra keyboard and mouse would be a waste. I am however a snob I have my machine OCed by 30% or so and a full tilt graphics card and I mainly surf.

Truthfully you only need a Mobo and processor and ram right MK(baring your answer on OS costs)? You have optical drives and hard drives already right?

Since he's probably gonna have it for a really long time you might as well go for a Nehalem CPU of some kind. That i3 Acer fits the bill nicely.

* I also may be building a "gaming rig" to work with my server type rig soon too. I'm just not sure if I even want it though. I am just the type of guy who hates waiting for a computer to think. If a web page takes more than 1.5 seconds to load up after it's been downloaded I get crabby.

I have OC my at 50% and am very happy with the results. And most of the part were not bought from the same place. Just took it all home, put it all together, installed my illegal copy of win7 and...
