I'm not sure Affordable and .338 Lapua should be in the same sentence...

affordability is to .338 Lapua as gourmet food is to McDonald's

if they had these kinds of analogies on the SAT I might have gotten a much higher score

Fair enough analogy. But I *WAS* looking at .50 BMG. Compaired those, .338 is like .308 to .22.

You should be able to put together a excellent rifle for 2k or under, then you need another 800+ in glass on top of it.

Barring your preferance you made before if you were to build a great .338 rifle for under 2k what would you do?

:opens mouth waiting for spoon fed goodness:

:D

It's really hard to know the quality from the garbage in this industry. The armalite is under 2k. The opposite end is the timberwolf which is ~7k, but it's the tested rifle the guy in the article you linked talking about the .338.

I wouldn't buy a .338 Lapua..... :P

I don't know to much about .338 Lapua rifles since I've never really had a desire to build one, but first off if I was you I would start poking around snipershide.com forum and seeing what they have there.

I would look pretty hard at the Savage 110 BA though, heard some good things about them and are around the 2k price range. It seems like pretty well put together rifle that is in the range of what you want.

We actually went plinking yesterday. Put a few of these Hornady JHP's through the Redhawk; not bad, not bad at all. The lever action Marlin was a different story though, as there isn't really any padding on the stock and it tore my shoulder all to hell. Best part of the day was trying to hit balloons at 50 and 100 yards open sight with the .22LR Marlin semi-auto. .22LR <33333333

I personally don't own a .22LR. I kind of wish I did, but I know so many guys that do I could always find one to go kill cans or similar. They bring the rifle I bring the ammo and it's a good day.

Up untill very recently though I didn't have an area to plink, just actuall ranges that are more structured and targety, and way less old timey plinking fun.

Have you ever done the empty cans in a stream plinking?

Also, have you looked at something like a 6.5 Grendel cartridge in an AR?

What!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How on earth can you not own a .22? They are pretty much the most badass little cartridge ever! You can shoot all day for 20 bucks, cheap rifles, accurate, and can touch things out to 200yrds if you do your part.

Thanks for the honest tip. I know you're not a .338 kinda guy, but I think it might be fun to shoot. If I want I can always sell it later.

Already having a .308 option, 7mm, 30-06, and loaner .22LR I have an itch for something in a rifle that will give me the dirty hairy feeling.

After you mentioned about the springs in clips being safe I'm much much less interested in a mega revolver now too so my rifle budget bumped up a bit.

I have actually!

I would have to shoot one first and it's definatly interesting. From my understanding they are built on the .223 frame not the .308 frame correct? I can't get onto many weapon sites from work, and since the laptop is kaput at home I'm researching less than I would like. Being tied to the tower in the basement is hard for me.

I know I know! Everyone I know just owns a couple of them so I always borrow. It might be worth the $$ right now as I have a new spot to shoot, but before it was all range time and thus I had to pay the range fee. So we would go as a group and I would never go alone.

I also want to get so much time in with my .45 and .308 that the .22 is less interesting. Too shoot someplace other than a range I would have to travel several hours so it's less probable to go plinking.

I also want a bolt action. I love working the bolt on the 7mm and wanted that feeling.

I can understand wanting the big arse round for that shear fact of its BIG. Personally I have a hard-on for smaller rounds that are either superduper accurate or travel at warp-fucking-nine (or both). Plus I'm not as big as you, I can shoot big arse rifles, but them things hurt at the end of the day. I do know people who have thrown their backs out, bad, shooting big rifles (custom .50 BMG's) and that doesn't sound to fun to me.

Magazine springs are an item that you can leave compressed and it won't hurt them, what actually damages a spring is the cycling of them, not staying in one spot. *Now that is a given that they are properly spec'd out and not a retarded design*

If you need a badass handgun, get a Glock 20 (10mm) and send it out to GlockWorx for it to get done up right.

Picture of one they just did on a Glock29

RMR-G29-003.png

Their pricing

$165 for the sight cut (CNC machines w/ the sight posts so zero does not shift)

$412 for the RMR dual iluminated sight (price seems to fluctuate)

$165 Grip job (reduction w/ stipple texture)

$250 Fulcrum ultimate trigger

$40/hole for the porting

Correct, it is built for the AR15/M16 platform. Part of the problem with the lower is that the magwell isn't long enough for the longer really fun bullets, so that is how they got a 6.5mm bullet to fit in the mags.

The family that got me involved in shooting hates gloks. I have never even picked one up to shoot it due to their bias. And where I grew up it was a gangsta' handgun. I have heard that they are much improved though. Maybe I get one and just don't let them see it's a Glok. I love that pistol. Nice sites on it too. I <3 trij. I have their night sites on my 1911. I would LOVE to port my XDM in 9mm. It snaps up at the front so sharply. Such a light frame with 20 9mm rounds weighing the back down don't help either.

The 10mm is one thumper of a round man. 700 foot pounds of but kicking. Makes my .45 seam a bit shallow. I also didn't think it would be so cheep to buy rounds for it. .50 cents and under! You have me thinking now!

Have you ever had the chance to shoot a nicer AR Ryan?

For sheer joy when I'm cracking off .308 as fast as I can with that much down range accuracy it's pretty wild! The AK 47 is a riot and puts lead down range so well, and in a lousey enviroment I would pick that over the AR, but the solid feel of the AR combined with the extra powder behind the same caliber projectile is awesome. It's definately a confidence inspiring thing to shoot. Makes .223 feel almost worthless... almost.

I'm not a big fan of Glocks myself, never really shot them. But they are functional, reliable as death and taxes, and they flat out shoot.

I've played with DPMS AR-15's and AR-10's. Definitely fun, but I would go broke shooting them.

I got a SWEET deal on some .308 brass for less than .45.

:ehh:

As for the AK the roomates dad snapped up a steal of a deal and we got 1000 free rounds.

You need to start reloading.

I know. The .308 was about 30 cents a round or so, so I couldn't complain too much. One of my friends has a reloading system and he said if I buy the die and the components I could use it anytime.

I know if I do get a .338 I will be reloading for damn sure.

I heard reliability was the issue. I'm sure it was just their bias. I did feel that to grab it my hand was naturally angled wrong when I had the sites on target. The 1911 and XD was like magic. I point and thats where the lead goes.

I actually like the XD a bit more as my fingers are shorter than most guys.

Go Dillon or go home.

Yes, the Glocks have a different grip angle, but getting use to it is nothing that a little practice won't take care of.
