BRISTOL, Va. – Nineteen-year-old Keshia Canter handed three burgers, fries and milkshakes to a car-load of Tuesday afternoon customers at the Hi-Lo Burger’s drive-though window. A lady sitting in the backseat leaned forward, between the two men in front, and handed her a leaflet: “Women & Girls” it said across the top.

“Even though nothing is showing, you’re being ungodly,” Canter recalled the woman telling her. “You make men want to be sinful.”

Canter was wearing boots pulled up over jeans, a pink zebra-print shirt with a black jacket zipped up over it. She has blond hair, dark eye make-up and a little red lip ring. “I just asked if she needed any salt, pepper or ketchup,” Canter said. “I mean, how do I respond to that?”

Minutes later, Canter’s mother, Pam Yates, who owns the restaurant, returned from the bank. Canter handed her “Women & Girls” and Yates started reading.

“You may have been given this leaflet because of the way you are dressed,” it begins. “Have you thought about standing before the true and living God to be judged?”

It continues with one essential theme: The sins of men are, in part, the fault of women, specifically women in tight-fitting clothing. Yates was annoyed. Then she got to a section on page two:

“Scripture tells us that when a man looks on a woman to lust for her he has already committed adultery in his heart. If you are dressed in a way that tempts a men to do this secret (or not so secret) sin, you are a participant in the sin,” the leaflet states. “By the way, some rape victims would not have been raped if they had dressed properly. So can we really say they were innocent victims?”

The hand-out is signed “anonymous.”

Yates was angry.

“What if my daughter had been a rape victim?” she said. “I hope that they never handed this to anyone, especially a young person, who’s been through that and struggles with that daily. And then they get handed something that says they are at fault. I cannot believe that a Christian, someone who walks in God’s shoes, would have made this.”

Leaflet in hand, Yates locked eyes with the old man driving the old white car, still parked in the lot, and stormed outside. The car quickly drove away.

Sandra G. Rasnake, the sexual assault program director at Bristol’s Crisis Center, had one eyebrow cocked as she read through the leaflet Thursday morning.

She cocked the other as she read aloud: “some rape victims would not have been raped if they had dressed properly.”

“Wow,” she said. “This idea that men don’t have enough self control – and evidently they shouldn’t have to – plays into all the old myths that we’ve tried for years to overcome: Rape happens to 2-year-olds and 92-year-olds, not just attractive young women. How about we hold the person doing the action accountable, whoever it is going against the will and consent of somebody else?”

Rasnake said she confronts similar ideas, although not generally printed and distributed in mass, from the women she talks with daily. Victim blaming, she said, is the most prominent reason rapes are so rarely reported and even more rarely taken to trial. Sexual assaults, she said, come in second for the country’s worst conviction rates.

Victims blaming themselves often comes from a religious place, but not always, Rasnake said. It’s become a societal defense mechanism for dealing with issues of sexual assault.

“Blaming victims is the way we who have not been victimized feel safer,” Rasnake said. “If it’s their fault then I’m safer because I wouldn’t do that. If someone steals your purse, can you imagine someone asking why you had a purse? If you are sexually assaulted, it is not because you come with breasts.”

The Rev. Bill Houck, pastor of Northstar Christian Church, shared Rasnake’s concerns about the leaflet.

“It is this type of thinking that would cause a woman not to report being raped and to somehow think it is her fault,” Houck wrote in an e-mail. “As a Christian, a father and a husband, that is a horrific statement. The rapist is wrong period.”

Houck also questioned the leaflet’s interpretation of its occasionally cited Bible passages.

“You must look at the cultural context,” he wrote. “I was surprised the article did not reference Peter 3. Many of the same ideas are put forth. Here, it gets to the crux of the issue where the Bible says that a lady’s lifestyle should be focused more on the inner person than the outward clothing. This is why, while I agree with ‘modest’ dress, there is so much more to this issue.”

Houck said his 19-year-old daughter, a student at King College, asked why the leaflet doesn’t mention how men should dress.

“If I choose to sin, that’s my choice,” Houck wrote.

Rasnake was similarly perplexed by the leaflet’s little faith in mankind.

“It’s insulting to men,” she said. “The men that I know and associate with are not so lust-driven that they cannot control their urges. By this person’s argument, everyone working at Hooters deserves to be raped.”

I Have had a SHITTY week and need to vent alittle, So if you don't want to hear it GTFA.

Here,s the T&C of the sitution, If you don't know I work as a tattoo artist, I deal with the general public EVERYDAY ALL DAY LONG. The shop I work in doesn't belong to me , BUT is owned by my brother so might as well be. I am A pretty humble guy compared to most Artist's and strive to please my customers more than myself. My job requires Professionalism, A CONSTANT SMILE, and a GOOD attitude among other thing's, also being Efficent, as MY time IS money.

With that being said I have been put in the sitution several time's this week where I had to tell a customer to go f*ck themself's, NEVER a good thing, sad.gif BUT on the other hand I would rather that type person GTFA and never come back anyway. BUT I still must deal with the aggravation and stress created. I KNOW I am not EVERY person's cup of tea, AS I am pretty upfront, and deliberate and DON"T play NO game's. LIKE I SAID I AM VERY PROFESSIONAL. Some Muthafucken people think the world should revolve around them, EVERYONE should just want to please them, and DON"T THINK TWICE about how thier action's AFFECT OTHERS. BASICLY want something for NOTHING. YA well get bent biches.

I'm not talking about the shit I put up with everyday, I let that shit roll right off me. Like I said I had to tell a couple customers to lost, I went out of my way for a customer yesterday and went in early instead of spending time with my wife, and the stupid c*nt don't call, don't show. Basiclly A bunch of dis-a -fucken-pointment's.

I always remind myself not to set my expectation's to high, but MUST remind myself NOT to go out of my way for other's. BUT theres a problom with this, I ENJOY going out of my way for others So must REmind I help others because I am STRONG not because they are WEAK.

I have been an angry person most of my life and no longer want to be that way. Its just to bad a couple jackaases have to ruin things for everyone else.

Anyway I gobbled a Xanax and a couple Vicodin so Now I am like D.I.L.L.I.G.A.F. and today is my friday so I Hopefully I can make it through?

Thanks for listening.

Personally I'd get a comfortable chef's knife first. It sounds to me like your problem is that yours doesn't fit your style. I don't own a Santoku, keep thinking about it but I have other priorities. I also haven't found a chef's knife I really love either. I have the Global which is great for anything that requires you to really slice, but I don't like it on hard things so much. I have an F Dick, 12", which is HUGE and cumbersome, but when breaking down a lot of things it works really well. I'd use it more, but I don't have a big arse cutting board which makes it difficult to use effectively. The blade is so long that when breaking down onions I get a little nervous. I have a Cutco, which is crap, but I use it for things that ruin other knives. I have a Chicago cutlery too, which is even crappier, and that just stays in my camping stuff (actually 2 of them do :P ). I have enjoyed using the Ken Onion's, but there are also other more boutique blades that I think may be better for me. Since I haven't played with them yet though, I haven't bought.

For everyone else, hell actually anyone reading this, the FIRST cooking class I would recommend that you take is Knives Skills Course. I haven't and am sure it set me back years in the learning curve. There is a HUGE reason why chef's travel with their knives but don't pack pans. It makes more difference than anything.

I think maybe I'll get the chef knife sharpened(allong with all the others) and then go from there. Really find out what I don't like about it when I know it's not the edge holding me back. Come to think of it, the chef knives I have might be the cheepest wusthoff's vs the better santoku and thats why. I do love the feel of cutting an onion with the santoku, just push down and bam it's cut. No point first then rock type shenangins.

You shouldn't ever just push down, you always must slice. You need to let the knife do the work for you, working the knife is dangerous.

I'm speaking poorly I appologise.

I'm thinking onion dicing here...

I think what I mean is when I use the chef knife is I alwas feel I have to stab with the tip or sweep and rock the knife to degree that's not comfortable. With the down swept tip of the santoku style I feel like I have to be less agressive when cutting.

And in reading and thinking about how I use them I'm almost 100% sure my chef knife selsction is too small for me and that the spline is too small/steel not hard enough so I'm figting to keep straight.

I love the idea of Lambo doors. SO when some D bag parks too close I'm not stuck. I've heard people hate them though. I would have gotten them for the cavalier otherwise. The doors on that thing were ~4 feet and needed to open 10 inches just to clear the frame.

Yup.

Easier to be confused trying to pidgeon hole every scenario with the same solution. I will have to go to that shop in calhoun square. I think they have the best selection.

And I'm starting to get confused and thinking that maybe a transmission line folded horn reflex 14th order resonantchambered flux capacitor might be the right choice for cutting my celery.

That's the only thing I would find them useful for.

Gull wings are cool to look at but they still wing out.

I'm a HUGE guy. I bet your Hyundai had less door too (in width). I had to open it a long way just to clear the outside of the body. 2 feet of motion only made a gap of about 10 inches. To also better illustrate, it was also behind the drivers seat. Great for folks getting into the back. Not so great otherwise.
