Marijuana may protect the brain from some of the damage caused by binge drinking, according to a new study.

Researchers at the University of California San Diego performed brain scans on 16- to 19-year-olds in three groups: binge drinkers, binge drinkers who also smoke pot, and those with very little drug or drinking experience.

Binge drinkers showed damage in their white matter. But those who drink and smoke showed more damage than the control group in only three of eight areas of the brain. In seven of the areas, their brains were in better shape than the binge drinkers.

Researchers said in a news release from the Marijuana Project that the result was unexpected.

They said it could be that marijuana somehow stops alcohol from damaging brain cells.

Man this electricity bill is shit. I'm not complaining about the overall price, it is only $28.22. But the fact that I only used $9.71 worth of electricity is the stupid part. Then I have a customer charge, fuel charge (wtf? Are they driving my electricity to my house?), transmission charge, environmental charge, franchise fee, and an oh-what-the-heck "service charge." Plus sales tax obviously.

Reminds me of my Verizon bill..............

I also love the 'military discount' that I get with a regualr plan but not unlimited...............Pretty shitty.

So my POS phone finally shit out on me. I go to 3 different Nextel stores and none of them carry phones. I was told I have to order one. So I call Nextel support and the lady gives me two Sprint stores to go to. I go there and of course, they will only deal with Sprint stuff even though Nextel support told me they will do both since they are the same company. So I call Nextel back and ask them why I can't buy their phones at their stores, and of course, nobody has any idea, but they are very eager to sell me a phone while I'm speaking with them.

So now I am pissed, no phone, which is actually very nice, but if someone needs to contact me, the cannot. So I look at switching providers , and BTW, they all have the phones in stock that they sell at their store, but their plans are far overpriced.

So I call Nextel back and tell them to send me a new phone, and they say okay, you'll see it in 3-5 days, so I said, "No, you'll overnight me the phone," which leads into a pissing match with the operator's boss, and needless to say, it got me nowhere. So I sent them a nasty ass email, and coincidentally, we have a local representative who comes into our Sears store because somehow, Sears has a relationship with Sprint. He tells me he is going to take care of everything for me. I think he's full of shit.

If I had been a customer for so long, with such an old plan, which in comparison to what they offer now is dirt cheap, I'd have walked into a store and thrown the phone at them ala the Discount Tire commercials.

Sears has an agreement with Verizon as well, we get discounts through...Oh and that sounds shitty, I haven't had any problems with Verizon in the 6 years I've been with them.

I haven't had any issues with Sprint/Nextel, just the damn Motorola phones. I had one that lasted forever and the only reason I had to replace it was I lost it. It's just ridiculous that you have a store opened to sell a product and service, but you can only provide the service.

I actually got a response from them within hours, so that is surprising.

Here's my email to them:

Original Question: email

Question: I am very upset about the fact that none of my local Nextel

representatives stock the phones they sell. My phone stopped working

today and I needed to get a new phone. I visited 3 local stores and

they all told me I had to order the phone. I also visited 2 Sprint

stores and they could not help me because they only deal with Sprint

phones. So now I am forced to wait 3-5 days for a phone I had to order

to replace a phone that was problematic at best, all-the-while I am

stuck without a working phone. Not good for business. I was ready to

switch to a different provider, which as it turns out, they all stock

the phones they sell at their store, but I have been with Nextel for

many years and enjoy the ease of the push-to-talk feature. If you are

going to have a store to sell your product, make sure the product is

available. If not, it's not a store. You don't go to Sears to buy

tools only to have to order them. What a joke.

I have since ordered a new phone via customer support, but I hope that

if it ever breaks, when I need a new phone and go into a store to

purchase one, they will have the phones in stock. I hope someone

actually reads this and can do something about it.

I am sorry for the disappointment you have experienced. I have forwarded

your feedback to appropriate department. We will verify why our valuable

One great thing about living in the Midwest.

Here's what I made myself for dinner tonight since I am all alone.

Went to this place out in the country by my parent's house. There's a huge farm out there and they literally grow everything, including livestock. So, I picked up a pound of freshly butchered hamburger and bacona(they have an inhouse meat market and butcher on site 24 hours a day), went out back and picked a big sweet onion, some red and green peppers, a zucchini, half pound of whitecap mushrooms, a dozen ears of sweet corn, pickles, and home made mustard.

Came home, fired up the grill, soaked the corn and cooked away. So I ended up with 4 burgers, served on homemade buns which I baste with butter, garlic and parsley. Cut up the onion and pickles for condiments. Fried up the bacon in a little bit of brown sugar. Threw the corn on the grill along with the peppers and zucchini, which I basted in butter, and sprinkled with garlic and sweet basil, and sat down to a good ass grilled meal.

Tomorrow I'm heading to my favorite pizza joint for lunch. It's called Lacopos and they have the best damn pizza I've ever had. They're straight from Italy, and they have the best Italian food around here.

That sound amazing!

I'm sick as hell today. I work all day tomorrow at fest so I hope my stomach cramps stopp.

WASHINGTON – Toy-makers, clothing manufacturers and other companies selling products for young children are submitting samples to independent laboratories for safety tests. But the nation's largest toy maker, Mattel, isn't being required to do the same.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission recently, and quietly, granted Mattel's request to use its own labs for testing that is required under a law Congress passed last summer in the wake of a rash of recalls of toys contaminated by lead. Six of those toys were produced by Mattel Inc., and its subsidiary Fisher-Price.

The new law sets strict limits for lead, lead paint and chemicals known as phthalates. It mandates third-party testing for companies, big and small, making products geared for children 12 and under.

"It's really ironic that the company that was a principal source of the problem" is now getting favorable treatment from the government, said Michael Green, executive director of the Center for Environmental Health in Oakland, Calif.

Mattel is getting a competitive advantage, Green said, because smaller companies must pay independent labs to do the tests. Testing costs can run from several hundred dollars to many thousands, depending on the test and the toy or product.

Mattel says it demonstrated to the CPSC that its products go through rigorous safety tests. Spokeswoman Lisa Marie Bongiovanni also said Mattel has an appropriate "firewall" in place to ensure test results are protected from corporate influence.

"We have extremely qualified people who work feet away from our production lines," Bongiovanni said. "It allows us to do more testing than any other toy company out there."

Lead can cause irreversible brain damage. The six Mattel-related recalls in 2007 involved more than 2 million toys. They were part of a slew of recalls by several dozen companies. The recalls frightened parents and pressure came to bear on Congress to pass the new law, known as CPSIA. Mattel and Fisher-Price have not had any lead recalls since.

In June, Mattel agreed to pay a $2.3 million civil penalty for violating the lead paint ban.

CPSC spokesman Scott Wolfson said Mattel proved its case that its labs were insulated from undue corporate influence.

Similar requests from other companies that want to do their own testing are pending at the agency. The CPSC would not name the companies.

The agency approved seven Mattel labs as "firewalled third party laboratories" — the first to get that designation under the new law, which permits the "firewall" exception. Mattel pushed hard for the firewalled labs provision when Congress was considering the legislation. The company spent more than $1 million in 2008 on lobbying, according to federal records.

Mattel's "firewalled" labs are in Mexico, China, Malaysia, Indonesia and California.

CPSC issued no press release about the 3-0 vote in Mattel's favor, and information on the vote was not posted on the commission's Web site section pertaining to the CPSIA law.

Mattel says its situation is unique because it owns its production factories outside the U.S. and can do the required safety testing there. Mattel's Bongiovanni says the company also ships out some product to third-party labs, something it's been doing for years.

While Congress mandated the third-party testing, the commission in January said it would delay enforcement for a year of some of the testing requirements for phthalates and lead content — though many companies are doing the tests anyway.
