Been messing around with the speakers today. I realized that the amps were still set for the old speakers with a HP/LP of 4500Hz so it was definitely screwing with the sound :P. What happens when you stack a 24db slope on a 24 db slope?

I currently have the 27TD crossed at 2800Hz HP 24db slope and the ER18's at 2800Hz 12db slope. Zaph audio states he did the crossover as an asymmetrical 4th order Linkwitz-Riley at 1750 Hz. From what I gathered this is a 24db slope crossed at 1750, but I don't know what asymmetrical means. I'm also a little weary of dropping that low just for the fact that I blew my DLS tweets at there factory crossover point with what I thought was not too much power. I'm going to work them up and down and get time alignment set and see what I like but I was just looking for opinions on crossing those bad boys at something as low as 1750.

At this point you need to just ignore what Zaph says as the application is very different.

Here are a few tidbits (all with exceptions of course):

-I'd never use 24dB slopes on my front stage, try 6 or 12

-I'd never cross my tweeter and mid at the same frequency. Instead you need to underlap them

-I've never run all four drivers (2way) on the same phase

-It is always best to listen to one mid and peg its limits, then one tweet and peg its limits. You cannot hear what you need to when everything is going

-Only use cuts on your EQ, not boost

-When starting with the tweet, keep in mind that 2x the Fs is probably as low as you want to go....unless of course your mid forces you two. This would cause an exception to the first tidbit

-Use your ears -- fuck other people it is your system :)

-Less is more when it comes to the eq. Some warble tones to find hotspots in your FR is helpful.

Oh as for your 24dB+24dB setting. It will give you a crossover with some serious phase delay and a slope of somewhere between 24 and 48dB depending on how symmetrical they are.

Seas is even conservative. 550Hz FS with a minimum cross point recommendation of 1500Hz. 3x Fs is really the safest, but you will need to do what the ER tells you.

I would expect the ER to stay rather composed in your doors up rather high though :)

Amusing since all the threads are basshead based in the rest of the forum that I get to give help in the Hop instead.

Yeah that was a helluva good post.

Quick question.

Should I setup TA at this point or get the crossovers fine tuned first?

That excites me that my tweeters have the ability to go that low and I also noticed they say 90W RMS handling. Just good insurance for me to feel like I can throw what I want at them at not have to worry about going beyond their limits.

I know my biggest complaint about my DLS set was I felt like the sounded terrible at the crossover range, so i would love to give the tweets a little more duty in this setup.

I notice the CA18 and the ER18 are very similar drivers. What really separates their performance?

so a new law in our town. one warning then going to jail for disturbing the peace

Obviously there are a ton of dipshits in your town otherwise no one would have ever thought that law to make sense. You should leave.

As far as I know, the reed cone of the ER is a bit more rigid compared to the paper cone of the CA, which in general translates to a more detailed sound.

Went and did the TA for the speakers. I like how on the h701 you can hit turn it on and off to hear the difference. It does a good job of centering the stage.

I went ahead and set up the TA for the passenger as well. I figure if I demo to people I can set it up for them to get the best possible sound, though all I did was flip the delays around. I didn't feel like re measuring since they would be so close. I did remeasure the distance for the sub though. The h701 has 6 presets so 1 is for me 6 is for passenger

If you are using distance as your parameter then yes.

90w and that low won't work, but they are beastly :)

copper rings in the ER :)

And of course the CA is an old style paper cone, the ER has a lighter stiffer cone.

For me that is easy. Birmingham, AL.

Its nothing personal just didnt like the feel of the city, the layout or the majority of the people I met.

People make a city, the rest just sort of follows along.

Least of never want to go's in the US:

Vegas

Atlanta

Detroit

Pittsburgh

I'm done being a dick, but if you live in any of those four places move.
