Posted these screenshots on a different forum about why .mp3 sucks and how much you actually lose in the format... I just used the spectrum analyzer in foobar.

Sad thing is not everything can be found in .flac :(

Also, the actual quality of the recording matters. I have some Red Hot Chilli Peppers albums in flac and the recordings are garbage.

Very true, I have some music that I would dearly love to have recorded better, but alas, it was when the artist was not a very big name and it sucks.

Although the analyzer can show some differences, your ear is a whole different animal. Obviously the all digital analyzer has a bit more capability to resolve than we can. In the mp3 realm 192k is audibly different on some tracks, although not all, in particular in your car. Hell I guarantee most people couldn't tell the difference back to back.

I have actually been contemplating a data reduction for my music collection. It is all FLAC now as I ripped my own CD's but keeping it that way takes too much space. Since I have the originals I may blast it all down to mp3 and call it good, I just haven't decided what rate yet though. The one thing I can for sure say is that it will be higher than 192, but I am not sure by how far.

"in particular" -> real obvious that the noise floor of your living room is a bit higher than in the car, on top of that obviously it is much easier to make things sound better in home.

Funny thing is RHCP had good recordings back in the day. The newer albums are recorded like crap.

True, true. I was tempted at some point to start buying.

Had some "bad" experiences lately, same song downloaded from 3 sources, each version sounded diffrent.

I'm not even bothering with extremely high quality when the engine is running in my little tractor. Although I have to admit I noticed some diffrences driving in a friend's car but i think most of them are because of very high recording levels.

Chicane albums were a nice surprise. Good recordings IMO. Can't find them in flac so I might just start buying albums :P

I know a few people who keep houndreds of audio CD's in the car just because "mp3 sucks". One of them wanted to install armoured glass to reduce road noise. Talk about obsessions.

Why bother? Storage space is relatively cheap... 320k seems to work pretty well for me though.

My roommate is a fucking retard. I had a paper that I needed sitting on the kitchen table... The table in our house is a staging area for stuff, it was there not two days and he burned two holes in it fucking around. Now I have to wait till monday till that office opens back up to have them print me out another one so I can get it mailed off.

Fucking retards, I swear they will be the death of me.
