I just wish I had seen this coming earlier so I could have whored the hell out of the torrents there. I had a lot of buffer I could have used up.

I had some decent space to use too... 1.5 share ratio.

My ratio was fine (never below 1.3) but my buffer was quite large...I could have downloaded another 230GB without uploading anything before I would have been banned.

I had about 180 gigs to download before i was back at 1 :(

I only had ~80GB of room to mess with

Still, Scott, you did really really well in a short period of time.

I, personally, think OiNK won't be coming back. In the mean time, I'll be going back to IRC, Demonoid, and Filemp3.

They throw money at it. They scare and strong arm people who may know a guy who knows a guy who knows someone... etc

record labels and movie production companies have tons of liquid $$$ and can influence governments pretty easily.

I've never figured out how to use IRC, and have no clue what Filemp3 is.

Enlighten a brotha'?

I guess now would be a good time to learn how to use IRC...I assume they have stuff up to the level that Oink had, not just bad quality transcodes?

And now would also be a really good time as ever for that SSA network...wink wink, nudge nudge...wink wink.

seems like a good idea.

the underground radio station Aaron mentioned in the "now playing" thread is another idea worth considering.

IRC is where you can find a ton of scene releases, primarily encoded as v2 mp3's. It is possible to come across transcodes, but if you're downloading from a bot in one of the channels, it's almost definitely encoded as a v2.

IRC

Advantages

- Typically stellar speeds

- Sharing not specifically required in most channels

- Great collection of pre-release leaks

Disadvantages

- Selection: If it's been released in the last month, it should be very easy to find. If it's older than that, you'll probably have a hard time getting to it.

- FLAC: Pretty much non-existent, unfortunately.

- Hard to find: Take 1,000,000 users and spread them out over 100 networks with 1,000 different channels on each network and virtually no searchable database in which to find them. Quite often you have to know where to find a particular style of music in advance; this can sometimes be found via google (or sites like packetnews.com) or just by finding out from people in the various IRC channels

Filemp3

Advantages

- Torrent system means it's an easily searched database and relatively good speeds

- A fair number of torrents

Disadvantages

- Selection: Not near the selection of OiNK, in terms of quantity or quality

- FLAC: None that I have ever seen.

- Ratio requirements

Usenet

Advantages

- Fast speeds

- Very good selection of recent releases

- Relatively easy to look through if you have a usenet browser or search program

- No sharing required at all

Disadvantages

- Retention rates: Usenet only retains files for a given period of time...usually 30-60 days and sometimes considerably less

- Selection: Retention rate is a sort of buffer...older releases get pushed out.

- Costs money: Usually a good usenet browser requires a subscription of something on the order of $10/month

- FLAC: I didn't see any when I used it a long time ago...hopefully there's some there now.

And now would also be a really good time as ever for that SSA network...wink wink, nudge nudge...wink wink.

Yeah, we should probably get on that. I've got a lot on my plate so someone else should lead on it but I'd be happy to contribute music.

I have no idea how to do that...but it sounds like we'd have a better selection of lossless stuff between all of us than what's out there :)

So what does it take to set up a channel?

That's fine with me. You pick a channel and a network. We should work on putting together a how to for something like SysReset as well, so people can easily set up there fserves.

Pretty much nothing at all. We just need to teach people how to allow themselves to share amongst one another.

Guys I am not opposed to setting up some sort of file share arrangement on the host we have the TeamSSAudio.com site on. But we can only use up so much space there, unless people would be open to the idea of a small donation towards it. But I don't like asking for money. The other issue is I would not know where to start to get it set up.
