Sean, I need a new rim, and rear brake pads on my bike, any recommendations as to what brand to get? Also, any recommendations as to what brands to look at for upgrades for the rear brake assemebly, its a traditional style pads on the rim brake setup.

I have one of these...

Link didn't quite work right. By traditional rear brake do you mean cantilever style or old school?

Also do you have a 28, 32, or 36 spoke hub? (32 is std, but I am rough and usually upgrade to 36, if you break rims regularly it is a good idea too).

Depends on your budget as well. I have had good luck with Mavics in the past.

What is on there now is a 36 spoke Matrix 550 wheel. The brakes are the traditional cable squeezes two brake pads agains the rim style.

Not surprised you have a mangled matrix, but I am that you actually have a 36 spoke. On a bike in that price range that is really unusual.

As for pads since those brakes look like old skool cantilevers, I use these on my bike and they made a huge difference over the shimano xtr ones that came on it. Cheap too!

I wouldn't put those pads on the rear and have crap ones on the front though, I'd order a full set or move the new ones to the front. ;)

Okay, the guy that sold me the 8454 does not have the cage, trim ring, or removal tool. I found one on ebay for $29 but figured someone here might have a better idea. If he will give me the $29 back I will keep it otherwise it goes back *frustrated*. Anyone have any ideas??

Thanks for the info Sean...

Now to just find a rim thats got 36 holes drilled in it...

When I find some they say 36H, does the H stand for anything?

You sure you really have a 36?

Not sure on the H...but it sounds god awfully familiar. Perhaps the beers with dinner have shut down the brain.

Its no problem, it ain't all that far to the garage, plus it gets me off my skinny arse.

Instead of f'ing around and putting the rim on myslef and having to screw with spokes and what not, I think I'll just take it to the bike shop in manhattan and let them deal with it, hopefully they don't want to much money!

think I'm about to go watch 28 weeks later. My room mate said it was pretty good. Reviews say it wasn't as "indie" as the original. I guess meaning it wasn't as low budget as the first or something.

Can you reuse spokes?

Is there anything hard about changing out a wheel either, or do I just need a spoke tool and have at it...

Would it be alright if I went to a wider tire/wheel as well to make it easier on myself finding new stuff? (Going to change front and rear while I'm at it)

Probably around $40-50. It takes a good hour to tension them right. They might do it in half that, but it will take you twice.

that's a lot of money. I need to get into the sport seriously before I spend that kind of money. ;) it does look cool though.

wasn't really a recommendation, but a superb bike. buying an older ti frame that has been ridden isn't always the best idea but a brand new old one is teh sweet.

Are your hubs worth a chit? You might be better off finding a complete used set of rims and hubs. By the time you change both you could easily have a couple hundred bucks into them. Look for a used pair from someone who is upgrading to even lighter stuff and as long as they are true they should be fine. I have bought and sold a lot of used rims in my time.

watched 28 weeks later and I'll give it a B-. It starts out pretty good but it kind of goes down hill. The ending IMHO, just kind of sucks. Still it's one of those movies you should watch and make your own call on it.

I kinda want to see it, i'll probably wait for DVD though. Heading back to bburg tomorrow, looks like i'm going to have all kinds of unfun stuff to deal with.

Boo for the unfun stuff.

I don't go to movies, even though I should as the w is starting to question why we need a home theater room in our next house.
