1. Cause of the strike: three houses on my street (28 houses total) put up for sale between yesterday and today.  *Hopes someone cool moves in*

2. Throw some names out for the towers.  Was thinking something along the lines of a Roman/Greek god/goddess ... they seem to sound cool.

Dionysus or Braccus

steve...u should name ur towers the Muses

devillian..unions are a good and bad thing as jmac pointed out. but ur dad is also correct. they do in fact "spoil" the workforce. so much in fact that even if a person gets fired justly, a good union, thru arbitration, will have said person reemployed, with back pay, quite rapidly. and the workers get complacent about job security..and production can suffer.

conversely, without unions in some workplaces, places where u're constantly endanger, or exposed to hazardous materials, u could possibly be working for nothing and to die. they can and do tend to offer the worker a safer place to work and help keep employers from cutting safety corners.

my stance on unions? divided. even though i'm part of one, i could honestly care less. though it does help in the benefits area, it sucks because of seniority a good worker will get laid off while a lazy retains their job. and it's hard to get ppl to retire and move up when they are in the gravy.

SS, steve, In your opinion is the union a good thing? I have been trying to understand all of it but havent got it yet. I have also been talking to my roomate's father. His father says "the union has ruined the work ethic of america." thats what he believes. I have no opinion, I'm just trying to understand how it all works.

Right now it's a terrible thing ... the union is screwing us over big time because they didn't bargain hard enoug right from the start. I just got paid yesterday ... mandatory 3 weeks picketing before you start getting paid, now I get $60 checks once a week from here on out - that is just plain insulting.

When there is a contract and you're working unions are a good thing. They'll cover your ass if you don't like what is going on at work and you speak up ... plus, your boss can't just walk up to you and fire you - if you're non-union/staff, you could hit the road at any time.

I don't care if I'm in a union ... they only reason our section is in the union is because of the benefits. Although I'd probably make more in this town if I wasn't in the union.

So, if you decided to get out of the union right now (if you can) and went back to work, the company can basically fire you on the spot? and you have no back-up. That sucks a lot.

So, its basically, wait out the strike, or find a new job?

Exactly - however, there are no jobs around here because 'on-strike' = no money = businesses cut back/lay off/close = no jobs = 3 homes for sale on my street already = pissed off employees who aren't going to give a chit when we go back to work.

My personal opinion:

A good company that will actually take care of it's workers and provide them a positive working environment and attitude will not need a union. Of course, with larger workplaces, this is difficult if not impossible to find. People become numbers and that's where problems start.

When I was an electrician, I was union, of course. IBEW. Now all locals are different and their "strenght" will be dependant upon their members and officials. Ours was WEAK, I got screwed.

I was fired after being ill for quite some time. Had doctors excuses and everything. Unfortunatelt, my supervisor, whom I turned all my paperwork into, was rather lazy and forgetful and my paperwork got pushed by the wayside. I was also in fault, as I did not think to have him sign them. We had a great working relationship and I figured I would be taken care of. Boy was I.

Long story short, I devoted 6 years to this company and had gone from a laborer to a crew leader in just 3 years. Whenever they needed last minute overtime, I was always the one. Whenever they needed out of a jam, I was always the one.

When the chit came down on me, I was .003% over the time allotted for being absent, which came out to exactly 32 seconds. I was fired. No questions asked. FOR 32 freaking seconds!!!! They never factor in all the extra effort you give them working past your normal shifts.

And my union. No fight at all. They said there was no way it would stand in court. My ass still hurts.

They've got it down to the second here. You leave one second before you can officially retire and you get the penalized version of the pension for leaving early.

Down to the second sounds a little overboard, and a lota ridiculous.

Hmm, yeah if the work place provided a good work environment in the first place, then a union that has to fight for that stuff, wouldn tbe needed, makes sense. I guess there will always be a group of people to fight everything.

Damn, lightning hit the microwave tower yesterday afternoon about 25 feet away from my office and fried a bunch of crap. My new work computer, just got it in January this year, and some network and PBX stuff. Finally got our old computer up and running on the network about an hour ago. :ohsnap:

There's barely any caffeine in pop ... 355 mL of Coca-Cola Classic has about 10% the caffeine of 250 mL of coffee.

4 cans (1.4 liters) of pop = 100 mL of coffee

I'd say it's more likely the sugar that kept you up ...

PS - 4 cans of pop is crazy ...
