What sub to get or subs

Recommended Posts

I have a ram quad cab that they will be going in. I will be using the center console for the placement of the subs. Dim. that I have to work with are 26 long 17 high and 15.5 wide. Those dims or smaller but I have plenty of vol. for a wide range of subs. Subs will be in sealed enclosure. I'm wanting sq but with a little attitude. I'm using CDT ES 06 for mid bass in my doors and CDT ES 04 and tweets in kick panels. My amp that will be powering the subs is a US Amps old school 100 HC. Would like the amp to see 1 ohm so I can get full use of the amps power. Aprox. 1400 to 1600 watts at 1 ohm. Ok I listen to all kinds of music but mainly rock and metel with everything else sprinkled in. I've thought about one 15 like soundsplinter rlp or mach 5 I've never heard either of them. I've thought about one 12, 2 tens heck even one jl w6 13. I know that the jl would run amp at 2 ohms but prob still a good amount of watts going to it. Anyway give me some input of what you guys think. All I have around here is all your name brand stuff like rockford, jl, mtx ext. you get the pic. I'm looking away from mainstream. I do like jl's just not their prices. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks

Do you have a budget?

No not really. Open budget right now. I've been quoted 1800.00 for custom box and 2 JL 12 W6's. I would like to be under that. They wanted 800 for the 12's. I thought that was a little high.

anyone? I'm also looking at having the drivers fire down or if I use one drive then I might fire it back toward the rear seats. Any ideas are welcome. Thank you

I think 2 10"s or 1 12" would be the MAXIMUM you could put in there, simply because you wont have much airspace There are a lot of woofers that fall into that category though ;)

I think 2 10" Icons would be pretty sweet.

What year is the truck? I have a single 15 and love it. I have mine ported now in a 3.1 ft^3 enclosure down firing. I went 16" wide x 34" long it goes all the way to the back seat. with the dimensions you have you can achieve 3 ft^3 I would suggest a back firing 15" I originally had mine in 3ft^3 sealed I tried it facing forward up and back. facing the back was by far the best. if you choose to down fire it you will only beable to use a 12 or 10 due to the center seat brackets.

I have had 10's and 12's under the back seat as well, but space is very limited even when raising the seat a few inches. if you have an 02 or newer there is a few tricks you can do to the back seat to mount your amps on the back wall, these tricks allow you full access to them when needed.

I would suggest a 15" as I stated above. Either mach 5,fi q, soundsplinter, ssa icon all great choices and easy to do with the dimensions given.

like I said I have quite a bit experience with these trucks. any questions I will be willing to help any way I can.

I would post pictures but I can't remember how......lol just look at some of my past threads

Thanks for your replies. My truck is an 07 diesel. Chad, will a 15 the ones we've talked about play well with rock and different types of music sealed? It's been a long time since I've heard 15. I would also like to talk to ya about your amps behind the back seats.

yes a 15 can sound very good with rock.the size of the sub and larger subs sounding sloppy is a myth If set up properly. with out raising the back seat you can make the back of the seat fold down. you have to remove the back seat and the brackets on the back wall remove and install upside down. once you reinstall the seat, if you lift the bottom of the seat to 45 degrees you can then fold the back of the seat forward. then to latch the seat back in place lift the bottom again to 45 degrees and push the back of the seat up against the back wall as you lower the bottom. that way you can mount the amps on the back wall behind the seat but still have access to tune them.

I've been doing a lot of looking at ssa, mach 5 and soundsplinter 12" subs over the last few days. Looking at youtube vids and talking to a buddy thats owned a few soundsplinters over the years. With out the ability to hear anyone of these subs unless I buy one, I've been looking at specs. such as qts, fs, bl and of course power handling. Most subs that aren't straight up spl subs have a power handling around 700-1000 watts. I guess what I'm asking is this, ssa icon 12 has a bl around 15, mach 5 around 17 and soundsplinter around 20. This tells me motor size and strength I guess. So does that make soundsplinter a better pic? I know this maybe over reading into this stuff but how do I make a choice just roll the dice I guess. Just because my bud has owned a few soundsplinters I would choose them but with their build house going tits up tc sounds I'm looking around one last time. Can anyone give me their input on what to look at and maybe their experinces with any of these subs. Thanks

this is not mine however I wish it were.....lol

Decahemi is a great guy and has helped me out alot. if you go to his gallery you can see he has built alot of enclosures and his build quality and attention to detail is second to none. Check out this thread.

I haven't used SSA, mach 5, fi, rlp, but I would have at least 1 of each if I could afford it........lol
