Icon vs Bl

Recommended Posts

would a 12" icon and a 12" bl be comparable woofers performance wise?

which would do you guys think hits harder and picks up lows best?

(this isnt for me, this is for a friend, he his trying to decide between the two and wanted me to ask)

Two different drivers with different intentions. The BL is a high output driver that can sound good in a daily install, the Icon is a great sounding driver that can have decent output in the right install. The BL take take more power. Your friend needs to decide what the goals of his install is.

he doesnt have any specific goals....he doesnt care if it doesnt sound good with music he just wants a ton of bass. very vague i know, but thats what hes told me before.

ton of bass, i would go with the BL man. Get a nice big enclosure, ported to around 32hz

yeah i know the bl would be better for just pure bass....but i was wondering if the two were comparable because the icon was cheaper and he wants to find the best deal on his system.

The Icon will play the lows better, but I really doubt that your friend actually cares about lows.

he does...all he listens to is jeezy and gorilla zoe. and some gucci.

Exactly, he doesn't want the lows. He wants output. That isn't low.

what do you mean...i thought you would want a sub that hits the lows really well with that type of music?

could you explain?

most of that music has bass that is centered around 40 hz, which a bl would shine in that range.

when the op was saying a icon has better lows than the bl he means a range around 38/35 hz and on down.

The Icon will play the lows better yes, but as I said before the style of music he listens to doesn't have lows.

I wouldn't generalize all rap as such.

Songs such as Hood Nigga, White Girl, Put On, and many many others/chopped and screwed mixes peak anywhere from 26-34 htz.

That's where I have my system peaking at...

But you are def right in saying that MOST rap centers around 40 htz.

Jeezy's stuff almost always hits hardest near 40-43 htz.

Consider the range that subs play. From about 22 - 50 htz (approximately).

In that spectrum, 40 htz actually is mid-high range.

40 htz is low compared to the frequencies in music, but compared to the frequencies that subs play (which are relevant in this topic), it isn't exactly low.

Ive owned both. The ICON is a very good sounding driver, definetly good for low music. As for BL's I found it that my 15" BL's had problems hitting the lows. Anything 38hz and lower the BL's had problems getting loud. If you just want output get the BL's they sound decent. If you want low and sounding good get the ICONS.

"Lows" to me is anything infrasonic :) You won't think Jeezy is low if you listen to a setup that can play the fundamental of a 32' pipe on a pipe organ at reference levels :P
