Went to Car Toys today....

Recommended Posts

So today my friend and I got pretty bored and decided to go to Car Toys and screw with them. I went in and was looking around then they came up to us asking if we needed help. I said well I'm trying to find something louder then what I already have. The sales guy and installer wanted to check out what I had so I took them out to my car. I told them I'm gona turn it up about 1/2 to 2/3..which I did. Well my friend said it looked like my car was breathing it was flexing so much and then my mirror fell off (which is pretty tough to do). The installer goes..thats pretty loud! What do you have? I said well I have this Sundown Audio sub..I believe its called? He said I've never heard of that but.. I think two 12"W7's or maybe some fosgate 12's ohh or a pair of type x's will probably do the job of getting louder cuz they have "more cone area"...I just laughed and was like wow! I never knew they could get so loud...especially for being SQ subs. Then he asked me what shop made my box...then I said I made my box..and he looked all surprised and I then I said really... this sub would murder anything that you just talked about. Then I went on about how people just have two of these bad boyz with two 1500Ds and are getting in the 150's on music. He got all speechless and emberassed cuz he knew he just got played.

once i asked the guy at futureshop if he has a voltage meter for my soundsystem and he asked me why. when i told him i wanted to keep check on my battery voltage to make sure my volts dont dip too low he replied word for word "why do you need battery voltage for your soundsystem, once your car is started you don't need the battery anymore, everything just runs right off the alternator...trust me i know i went to mechanic school". then when i reassured him he was wrong he said "so you gonna buy the headunit or what?"...this guy thought he was so smart too, i felt like punching him in the head but instead i did the right thing and told him "wait here just a sec i gotta check something" and i found another salesman and made him do the transaction at the cash next to his to make sure that dumbass didnt make comission off my ass.

Most of the people at audio shops I've met are very naive and close minded. Just because they work at an audio shop they assume they already know more than you do. Comical sometimes.

Had a girl at Best Buy tell me I need a 12" box for a 12" sub when I asked her for the manufacturer recommended box specs... :peepwall:

The shops around here will only recommend/know about their brands. A lot of them up here dont keep up with online retailers/ companies. This one installer thinks that RE has the best subs and the btl is the quote "poor mans sub" of the MT stuck up abit?

Honestly, you really can't blame them.

There's only a few audio stores that I've been in that I'll go back to...

This is right out of my playbook. I use to pull that chit all the time. Awesome!

Well, I have a good one for everyone. First off, I work as an installer for Best Buy. I had a customer come in yesterday and was like "Do you have any subs, I think they are called, Purple Hearts???" So me being kinda curious, I was like "Nope, pretty much what you see is what we have. Who EXACTLY makes a Purple Heart sub??". Of course, it was a I heard from a friend, who heard from a cousin of a guy. He then proceeded to tell me that a guy had a pair of 12's in his car, and the bass was SOOOO loud, that he actually died from the bass. I, of course, immediately started laughing. I was like "I don't mean to sound like I don't believe you (of course I didn't), but bass is not going to kill someone". I then proceeded to tell him that in the freak chance someone DID die while listening to a stereo system, it would more than likely be from some other circumstance such as a anyerism (sp?) or something of the like, and surely not from a company that sells speakers called a "Purple Heart", which to me is kinda disrespecting to any vets who have gotten wounded in the service. I just happened to have my Nightshade in the bay, so I walked him back to take a look at it. Once he saw the sub, he was like "DAMN!! That's one big sub." I kinda joked with him that if a sub called a Purple Heart killed someone, but yet was never heard of, then this sub will probably split an atom and cause a black hole to swallow the Earth. I got a good chuckle out of that for a while.

hahaha! you sure showed him! i bet you just ruined his day! /sarcasm. grow up. leave them alone. they are trying to do a job, and surely dont need some smartass "know it all" kids with there boutique brands wasting there time, when there may just be someone there who REALLY wants the help. (no, i don't work at a shop, nor do i advocate buying from them, and NO i do NOT dislike boutique brands. matter of fact, i support m5 fully... kids like you just get old. the guy is doing a job. that's all.)

Okay guys, I have a confession to make...I'm getting a job at a local shop. But the owner is a frekin' cool "young" guy, he has sold just about everything, and really follows online brands too. I talk with him for hours about Fi, Sundown, SSA, all that jazz. He is one of the VERY few shop owners that you can just talk to for a while and he wont try to beat a sale out of you, he knows me and my all friends by name. I am actually really good friends with him too.

X2 . Every installer , salesman ,or women starts somewhere .and yes, there is a learning curve like to know when someone is wasting your time. And the funny part is the one guy still bought something from them it may have been a register over, but future shops got the last laugh.

Maybe I have misread a couple threads here but are you guys defending bullchit installers and salesmen? I have been installing since the mid 90's and have seen and heard it all. I love those who play the MECP card yet they have never even heard of a diode and can't even explain the basic function of a relay. The biggest joke is the "Best Buy Certified Installer". It kills me when I see that badge. Yes, there is a learning curve but if you work at Best Buy or some crap like that you aren't going to learn much and you definitely shouldn't claim you know it all. What sucks about the audio industry is the lack of regulation. I would like to see the industry governed because it is in some serious trouble. Anybody can be an "installer" and many shops don't require any experience whatsoever. You see all these punk kids come out of high school who have installed a few systems for friends and then claim to be the best installers in the world. These guys are picked up by shops like Best Buy, Circuit City, Audio Express and other BS shops. Many of these clowns hack up vehicles which leaves a mess for installers like me to clean up. You cannot properly learn this trade without some form of mentor or guidance and it isn't something you can master by taking classes, reading books or browsing forums. If you want to be an installer or want to know your car audio take the proper steps. Don't claim to know things you know nothing about and you won't be left looking foolish.
