help with a little 2 way HT

Ok I want to get a little 2 way HT and something to listen to music with. I really like the woodies on parts express since they are cheap and I wouldent have to build a crossover. Im just trying to put something together that is cheap I was thinking this receiver pioneer vsx-518-k I figure that way if I ever want to go 5.1 I could. Now my question is would this receiver work is it enough power to run these? What would the drivers wire down to, what load would the receiver see?

If you don't want to build much for a crossover building a full range setup would be better for you. Nice and cost effective as well.

I really like the look of the woodies and would like to go with those, I would probably use cherry and ash and then trim it with walnut. So would that receiver work to power those or am I going about this wrong?

There are a few fundamental flaws with the woodies for your build. For a first build, you should never do a three way. The drivers in that speaker aren't really worth putting together. An off the shelf crossover will not really work all that well. The design goals of the whole speaker does nothing for me. Personally I think they would be a waste of money. Instead for less you can really build one hell of a full range setup which will be simpler, sound better, and you can make them look however you like.

Could you help me put together a full range setup or atleast point me in the right direction. Also is that receiver any good for the money or is there better in that price range. I know its nothing special I just want something decent that will get the job done.

Places to start I built a pair of BIBs with Fostex 6.5" full range drivers, they go all the way down to 30Hz confidently and still have a great top end

Ok thanks I will do some reading on that site, but do you have any recomendations for a reciever that would be better than that pioneer for under $200?

I don't know much about surround receivers in general, never bought one...basically, at that price point it comes down to which one is easier to use for you.

Ok I was looking at the spawn family on frugal-horn and I really like the half chang and the G chang they seem pretty simple and would be pretty easy to build. I like the half chang better just because its a little smaller. They both use the fostex fe207e 8", would these make a good bib setup. Also where can you buy fostex speakers and how much are they?

Ok I see madisound sells fostex and they're $90 each so that's not bad at all.

The BIB enclosures look much easier to design and build. But I guess the Frugal horn designs are driver specific designs.

Either route would probably be a win win situation.

I have no experience with either, but am sure that both are much better choices than the woodies. Tons of options that are more simple if you prefer though.

I was looking the the BIB designs and they are pretty simple. The only thing that is a little daunting is the stuffing for the best possible FR. Anyone messed around with these enough to get a good idea on how to stuff the enclosures properly?

Not getting the aspect ratio quite to the ideal for the Fostex Sigma, fiddling with the line length, etc...I got them as close to each other as I possibly could but they're slightly off what GM and Scottmoose recommend.

I've talked with a bunch of people that are running them off of 2A3 single ended amplifiers, which are 3 watts per channel. I'm using 8 watts and they get louder than I can stand in my apartment

Sounds like a type of transmission line, from they way they are stuffed by ear.

A TL might a nice option for my B&C 12CXB's.

Although they do rather well in a four foot bass reflex cabinet tuned to 49-50Hz.

What size sigmas did you use Jim? These speakers are becoming more and more appealing for a project. And I think I may have sold off some of the stuff out of my car!

But 8watts? I have my 14watt PP heathkit. I guess if I do this, I'll just have to take it easy on the volume knob.

I did a 4.5" BIB setup and in my dorms they get plenty loud off of 15 Watts but in my buddies big living room I can max them out with 20-25 watts and want a lil more. I friggen love the BIB's though. Such a simple project and so much fun to build. I will be adding a small sub this year for my room

The 6.5" Sigs (FE168's). Seemed to be a good tradeoff between the lower-frequency performance of the 8's without as much of the beaming issues (although the Sigs do better with that than the whizzered regular ones anyway).

Most of those Fostexes are rated for 25W, IIRC.
