I currently have a SONY STR-DG820 A/V receiver (got it for free) and the subwoofer output is a single RCA.

Is it not possible to use a Crown XTi 1000? (I have never seen connectors like the back of the Crown before)

I originally was going to power a Fi Q18 with a Dayton HPSA1000-R 1000W Rackmount Subwoofer Amplifier. But then as far as the reviews go that amp is highly overrated. I don't have a serious problem with that but I would like to get a quality subwoofer amplifier because I don't plan on having the SONY receiver forever.

The connection should be easy. The Crown probably uses 1/4" mono phono plugs (they look like an old 1970's headphone jack). Just use an RCA male to 1/4" mono make cable. Got mine from Radio Shack. Since I use a pair of subs, I use a 1 male/2 female "Y" adapter and run my Behringer amp in stereo.

The voltage to drive the amp can be the issue. I run a Pioneer receiver and have no problems pushing the Behringer into clipping. At that point, the output of my dual 15's is downright scary. I can't even hear my wife screaming at me to turn it down. There were issues with Denon or Onkyo receivers and their output voltage but I don't remember reading anything about the Sony models.

I know that Sony is really good with video processing. Should I just use this receiver as pretty much a "Video Receiver"? Then buy a preamp, a crossover with subwoofer out, an amp, and an equalizer for my audio?

A google search for 'rca to XLR adapter' only returned 59,000 hits. Musician's Friend was the first link.

Not only would you need a crossover, you would need a 5 or 7 input crossover, 5 or 7 channels of EQ and amplification for just the mains. With the adapter above, it should work. If not, you can get an Art Cleanbox and perform the capacitor mod. It is guaranteed to work then.

I don't think that amp would be highly overrated. Can you give links to the reviews that said so? Dayton makes great products. I have the PE version of their 500 watt plate amp and it's definitely not overrated.

And yeah there are XLR to RCA adapters. I have some for my Behringer crossover. I don't remember where I got them though.

You just gotta read the reviews. I know that its only a few out of a lot that said they are junk, but I think I am going to go with a QSC GX5 with a single channel of 850rms or a dual channel 700rms. Will be plenty enough especially if I decide to go with a second sub down the road.
