Problem with my component set.

Well, the issue I am having is that I am running the component set off of a Sundown SAX 100.2 2-channel amplifier which is rated at 100watts x 2 channels @ 4-ohms. The issue I am having is that I have the gains on this amplifier set at 1/3 of the way, the volume on the HU is at 26/35(roughly around 75%), volume offset at +3db's, and the EQ settings on a preset setting. No loudness on the Ipod EQ or the HU EQ. So I decided since I must be exceeding the tweeter's power handling that the amplifier must be outputting atleast over 20 AC Volts(= 100watts at 4-Ohm). So I took a DMM down to amplifier speaker outputs and decided to see how much voltage was being sent to the component set through one channel on most of the louder songs that I had. In my observance, the DMM was set to 200 AC Volts and the DMM read the voltage ratings in almost real time with the different peaks and whatnot of the song. Not once did the DMM's reading peak over 20volts.

I also notice that alot of times the PTC seems to shut down the tweeters after a moderate amount of time of playing the song instead of immediately when the power surge from the amplifier would be apparent. In addition to that, alot of times the tweeters will not be distorted, showing signs of stress, or losing clarity when they cut out despite the loud volume of the music. Its kinda random. So Im not sure if it may be a fault in the crossover, or overpowering, if there are any ways to determine if either theory is correct, I would love to know.

Hmmm are you sure your using the dmm correctly, and try testing voltage on a test tone.(im a noob so i suggest waiting for more experienced people to chime in)

Tested the voltage on the test tones.

At 120-129hz it read an almost constant 20.1 AC V

It maxed at 80hz - 89hz range with 26.3 AC V

But gradually decreased from 129 < and from 80hz >

Hmmm are you sure your using the dmm correctly, and try testing voltage on a test tone.(im a noob so i suggest waiting for more experienced people to chime in)

Well, noob or not, atleast you do reply and try to help and theres absolutely nothing wrong with that, especially in comparison to alot of people who don't even try to attempt to help.

Heh, I really do, its true.

Alot of people have told me that I'm a great installer as far as wiring, setting up, planning and designing but it just seems that with everything I get, nothing seems to work completely right.

I wish there was a way I could get my hands on a another duplicate set of crossovers for this set of maybe a decent passive crossover so I can see if its actually an issue with these specific crossovers or an issue with how much power I am sending them......

Lol in the last month 2 of my dogs got hit by a car and killed,both of my vehicles broke down,and i lost my job 2 days ago. Ive overpowered my Infinity perfects with 300 rms on each side and nothing happens like this.

Nope, one side will quit......then the other side will quit. Eventually both sides will both quit.... But they don't both quit at the same time.

i had a friend that had some RF comps that would do this...so i took off the door panel and played the system and about 12 mins later the cross over was GLOWING red... but he only had maybe 80 watts going to them... and RF claimed 300 rms 600 peak... i didnt install it so i told him to email RF. he never did. and thay still glow and cut off.

Well, I emailed Rainbow Audio after I replaced the halogen bulb protection feature and still the tweeters were attenuating and they informed me the following:

"Our Sound Line crossovers feature two tweeter protections which are connected in series. By replacing the halogen bulb with a silver wire jumper you by-passed just one tweeter protection. The second tweeter protection is a PTC which is kind of resettable fuse. The PTC protection is calculated according to the maximum power handling of the tweeter. Whenever the PTC will shut down the tweeter, you have driven the tweeter to the outer limits! We do not offer to by-pass the PTC as this is the last boarder before the tweeter dies by over-powering. You may short-cut the PTC by soldering a jumper on the copper side of the crossover PCB. The PTC is that yellow/brown round small thing with two wire connections. Please kindly note that by by-passing the PTC warranty claims for burned tweeters can not be accepted."

But I could see if the tweeters are sounding like they're being stressed and losing clarity or distorting but thats not the case at all. They are loud, loud enough that loud snare drum strikes can cause you to blink your eyes. But its very clear.
