5x7/6x8s vs 6.5s

Recommended Posts

I drive an Eddie Bauer Explorer and just recently added a 12" Icon and Sundown 1000D to it. It had the Mach Audio system in it already.

Well with the added bass, the speakers just can't keep up. They were fine with the factory 8" sub but are too weak now.

Here's the thing, since it had the premium sound, I can fit 6x8s in my front and rear doors. I listen to mostly metal and rock with a little bit of rap. I'd say like 80/20 rock vs rap. Should I put 6x8s in the doors for extra midbass or should I just use 6.5s?

Also, Ill be staying passive on these as SQ isnt a huge priority. Just trying to get more volume on the treble side.

Substituting speakers in a premium sound system isn't as easy as just replace and play. Premium sound systems have factory amps, which you may be aware of, which generally run off of different impedences than "normal." You may want to find out what impedence those speakers are and see if the factory amps can handle the 4 ohms you'll probably put on them with aftermarket equipment. Some run at 8 or even 10 ohms. If the factory amps won't support as low as 4 ohms you'll have to either install an aftermarket head unit or an aftermarket amp.

I'd say do 6.5" components if you have the motivation and resources to make adapter plates for the mids and find a place to mount the tweeters. If you're just looking for ease of replacement, just stick with 6x8 coaxials.

^^^ agreed. American international makes a 6.5 into a 5X7/6X9 plate but u would need to put the tweeter somewhere else. Id also recommend the hertz 5X7s... one of my good firends has a set of hi energys in his f150 and they wound awesome. But you want to get some vibration dampener... sounds so much better with some behind the speaker

It already has an aftermarket HU in it. I should have stated that I guess. It comes with 5 1/4" stock with a small tweeter next to it. I could throw 6x8s or 5.25s in it easily. Id need adapters for 6.5s.

Honestly, for your goals it sounds like it doesn't really matter which ones you go with.
