So I saw this thin on a car audio manufacturer site

and it was like a driver that you could attach to a subwoofer box that was an alternative to porting or sealing a box. I belive it was called an Independant Radiator Driver or something to that nature.

It looked like a regular speaker... had a cone and surround and what not but had no motor and i dont belive it had magnets either.

So my question is...

a.) if anyone knows what the hell im talking about

b.) if so have they heard them in action

There's really nothing to hear. They are basically an alternative to a port in a ported box.

hmmm are they ALOT alike? if so i think i might get 2 of them for my install to save a little room

PR's aren't used in cars that often. Driving around curves and hitting pot holes sends a lot of force through a car. A speaker cone that weighs 155g (a 10" BL sub), can easily handle a couple of G's of force. An 18" PR from AE Speakers has 1,600g of moving mass and can be weighted to over 2,000g. That's 4.4 pounds. The forces put on the suspension of the PR will be tremendous. Also, PR's can't be mounted horizontally. You must mount them vertically for them to properly work.

There are a lot of PR's available. Audiopulse when they come back from bankruptcy and AE Speakers are two of the more popular manufacturers.

PR's are used a lot in home theater subs. Check out the TC Sounds' beast for one extreme example.

I have 2 AE 15" 1050g PRs in my room waiting to be used. Too bad I have to pay rent or else I'd have a plate amp and be using them now.

guess its back to the idea of building a custom bench in the back then so i can put the subs in a proper box
