surge + battery backup

Recommended Posts

what is everyone using?

i would like to find something that is cheap but still could handle more than just a big screen. my entertainment area includes my 42" TV, yamaha rx-v630 receiver, a little phillips dvd player (nothing special) and a karaoke dvd player (also nothing special, imported from Vietnam), behringer ep1500 pro amp, and cable box.

i looked at the Belkin PureAV Home Theater Battery Backup with AVR Technology but to a lot of people using about the same set-up, it would overload easy. the price is good but i was thinking of going with a bunch of smaller pc surge+battery UPS battery backup units. i have a belkin 550 VA UPS and an APC ES 350 VA UPS for my computers, they work well. the belkin 550VA is fine with the PC, 22" lcd monitor, xbox 360 and 28" TV. and i got them both for 60 bucks. should i just go with about 3-4 of these smaller ones?

yea, thats the one i looked at and people were saying that it shuts off because of high loads. those people have pretty much the same amount of electronics as i do.

i also found this Cyberpower CP1500AVRLCD UPS for about the same price. its 400 more watts. but im still thinking of my idea of using multiples of the smaller UPS. i could get three 350 watts and it would be a lot less expensive than buying the cyberpower one and i would be getting the same thing. it would just take up space, thats all. what do you think?

I use a combination of a surge protector and a few, small UPSs. I protect my receiver, DVD players, projector and misc electronics. Each of my 3 DVRs has a dedicated UPS that allows it to run from 15min to 45 min. My Behringer EP-2500 is plugged directly into a dedicated 20amp circuit with no protection. I'm looking at getting a larger UPS to cover multple DVRs and moving one of the smaller ones to my projector. I don't care about watching TV during a power outage. I just want to shut down correctly and have the fan run for the 2 or 3 minutes to cool the lamp.

Why would you need a uninterrupted power supply for a AV receiver? So you don't lose the memory/settings?

I've got the monoblocks and preamp running into a Monster rack mount surge protector. Although, if I'm home the whole thing is unplugged from the wall if we're getting really bad lightning. No need for a UPS, I'd like to see how many seconds it would last powering the amps anyway :D

wont i lose the all the settings?

i mean if it is storming, there is no way i would have it on, but i just think that i might need a UPS just in case when there is a power outage and i could use at least get 5 mins to turn it off.

You won't lose the settings. All modern receivers have an internal battery, slow release cap or store the settings in non-volatile memory. You only need surge protection on them. Like I said earlier, I only need 2 to 3 minutes of time to properly turn off my projector. But I want my DVRs to run as long as possible so that I don't miss a minute of my TV shows. I record most of my HD programming via antenna so it takes a MASSIVE lightning storm to impact the signal.
