What are the benefits of using a capacitor in a car system?

I never could never understand the theory.......extra stored charge? Even a big 1 farad capacitor will still discharge faster than a battery in it's place.

well they discharge faster than a normal battery correct? therefore shouldnt they be able to feed the speakers what they need with more ease than any battery?

As long as the voltage to the amp is constant with no sagging, I can't see the need for a cap.

MikeS - that's when a cap can make a difference!

I strongly believe that a cap can not be a battery replacement unless the cap is so ungodly large that it takes forever to discharge.

You should only use a cap if your electrical system is in top notch shape. At that time, using a cap will give you that extra bit of power for fast responsive bass notes that you wont get from an alt or battery.

Competitions - caps can be a major plus as they can discharge so fast.

If you want the most out of your system, caps can help but only if your electrical system is ready and audibly, i dont even know if it's worth it.

seems like on a day to day basis (unless you are showing off and not pounding it 24/7) a cap wouldnt be a good idea but in comps and what not it could be a hell of a difference because of its ability to dischard in 20/1000 of a second instead of the 1 second it takes for a battery to discharge.

and jon.. only way i can see it bottlenecking a system is if they arent using a large enough cap to throw enough power out

i have allways just used more cells,, its a cheap way to get big results.

if you were in texas i would be willing to do a blind test with you on a few systems,

i would take a car, let you listen to it once with a 1 farad cap, one with nothing, and once with a cell.

i assure you can tell...... i can anyhow.

A cap is like a cat, both are useless. Since you see differently, please explain the benefit even in a competition setting or wherever you like.
