Prototype Big Boy SPL Motor

Recommended Posts

Got some specs with very little break-in time w/ the 8-layer round coil and 5 spiders:

Specs in series:

Re = 1.76 ohms

Fs = 44.3 Hz

Qes = 0.38

Qms = 14.52

Qts = 0.37

Le = 3.87 mH

Vas = 20.69 L

Bl = 24.40 N/A

Cms = 27.67 uM/N

Sens = 88.56 1w/1m

A *very* usable parameter set with the full 5-spider suspension - not bad :)

I played it at a low excursion level for just a minute or two so it's barely broken in at all - so the Fs is going to drop a bit more. I also don't have the dust cap on yet (will make a very tiny difference).

Figure out what your gonna do about testing?

I'll have it for a while doing my own testing before anyone else gets it.

First Video:

Launching card-board off the port w/ an E8 coil (copper) on it.

We did some more of this later, vids in process.

At the time I am posting it is still processing... give it a few minutes before clicking on it.

Can I make any guesses on what that piece of paper is covering in the gap? From the rear of the driver, I think I like the direction your cooling approach is heading.

:)

2400 watts didn't seem to phase it after a few minutes on sine waves.

* Holds cardboard against the ceiling from port air movement, 2400-watts clamped power on a sine wave

* Knocking one roll of tape off the port

* Two rolls of tape now (still processing as I post)

* Playing around a bit with the sub on music

that vid lettin it play music

does it get the full power of the 3000?

We have it at 1/2 ohm nominal, it is rising to ~1.5 - 2 ohms and seeing ~2000-2400 watts or so actual power pretty well constantly.

This box seems to have a pretty large impedance rise, so we couldn't get more on it. Based on how little we got it to move I don't see more power being much of a problem at this point.

We are going to see if we can get it in a vehicle tonight for some more testing. The test box is by no means good on the meter, but we may post numbers anyway.

Brandon's Bronco simply doesn't meter high - but this sub on the 3000D metered almost exactly like the three Nightshade 15s -- 143.5 dB

Need to try in a different vehicle for some good numbers.

We played around with it for about an hour an it's doing fine so far :)

Brandon has it in the Bronco daily right now.

He called me up and said by the time he got to work he put his 3000D into thermal protection (wired to 1/2 ohm) and the sub is still fine *laughs*

So far so good on testing.

wow that one tough sub but we need a test with 16k+ burp to see how tough it is lol

Yep - we will be doing a ton of daily testing first as playing for an hour or more is the real test on my cooling setup :)

Then we will start dumping a bunch of power on it for burps.

I expect to be testing it for quite a while to make sure everything is good to go.
