Amp and Preamp

Recommended Posts

I am looking for a 2 channel amp in the no more than $300 range. I dont know where to turn. I originally was going to get an A/V receiver, but I dont need the video part of the receiver. The back of the TV will do just fine. Better quality anyways, and I don't need the radio.

Anyways. I am going to be powering 2 KEF Q's coaxial 15-100 watt speakers at 6 ohms.

And are pre-amps basically to be the equalizer?

And also. If I get an amp, do I need a pre-amp? And if I need one, where should I start looking?

A lot of people with high end video still don't send their video through the receiver. Most receivers offer more than just video switching.

You want to run the audio directly out of your TV into the the amp (or pre-amp) and power the speakers in stereo. What TV is it? What are your video sources (cable, satellite, OTA)?

Better than what?

Some pre-amps do have equalization features. They can be as simple as volume controls only.

Are the audio outputs of your TV variable? If so, then you don't even need a pre-amp. Get something like the Behringer A-500 amp.

I want to hook up my mac mini, xbox 360, and ps3.

What is the difference between an amp and a preamp?

If I do get a simple volume only amp, should I buy an equalizer too?

I know that the more connections you have, the less perfect it is.
Eh, but not at the cost of other things :) for example, I'd take a separates system with individual monoblocks over a single integrated stereo amp given the room and budget to do it, even though there might be more connections involved.
Then along with an amplifier should I buy an equalizer?

Personal choice, or if you have specific room issues you want to address...
