Metering an amp

How do you measure the actual output of an amp in watts? I remember my friend Aubrey telling me how, but cant find the info again.

Im trying to figure out what my 601S Rockford Fosgate Amp puts out. It says 600 rms, and 1800 peak, which is strange for the peak to be so much higher, but anyways I've also heard that RF underrates their amps substantially like Kicker does.

So my question again is how do I measure the power an amp puts out?

Benching an amp takes some tools. You can't just do math and find out. It is not underrated to the point of putting out 1800 watts. It may put out 675 or so watts.

I remember using an ohm meter or a voltmeter to figure it out, then doing the math to put it into watts, but I forget how you do it.

You can do it that way, but it isn't very accurate. That formula takes into account the ohm load of the sub at that certain frequency which without specialized tools you just can't figure out.
