Light dimming. Adding batt.

Recommended Posts

Ok, I just got in my Fi Q 15. I have it running 1000rms at 1 ohm on a Sundown 1500D on stock electrical. I am getting a bit of dimming. I have a run of 1/0 wire with a 1/0 battery to chassis ground. I am thinking of going pickup a Kinetik HC600 or HC800 and put it in the back since, I still have to hookup my JL 300/4 back there. Would this take a bit of strain of my front battery?

I REALLY dont want to have to change my alt. Factory amperage on my Tacoma is 80 amp.

what year is your tacoma, if your alt is pcm controlled it could be normal. Also you could look into the missing link audio module, i have heard nothing but great things.

It is a 1999 Toyota Tacoma V6 5-Speed without ABS and no power doors. I know I hit a good note in a song and my Voltmeter on my Premier 880 showed like 12.6v down from 13.7-13.8v

You could look for a TRD alternator from an 04. They put out a great deal more power.

Check these out http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/TOYOTA-4RUN...sspagenameZWDVW

I was looking at the second listing you posted and I just didnt know how the quality was. It's not a bad price though. I would probably pay that if It did 165amp like it says.

So do you think that the HC 800 would solve some of my voltage problems? Newegg has some open box for $100 shipped. Only $50 more than the amp kit to power the JL im putting. I'll just hook the two amps off the battery and only need a short run of 4ga for the JL. Would you guys even consider open box? It's about $40 cheaper.

It's a bandaid. IT will help, but its not the solution.

dropping from 13.8 to 12.5 or what ever is fairly normal as long as you not dropping below 12 everything will be fine ur not gonna damnage anything... a better batt could reduce or eliminate your dimming if your not dropping below 12 already i have 3 batteries in the trunk of my car 2 of which are 85lb GEL cell batteries and i dont dimm at all running my 2 sundown 1500s at 1 ohm nominal .5ohm per amp... i also had to get the factory replacement 145 amp alt replacement on my car after a week the original 7 year old alt died but i have no problems at all now.

I'm not as much worried about the lights as is now, but I am worried it's gonna get alot worse when I put the JL 300/4 in there...

Thanks John, I went ahead and bought the HO alternator. I figure I may as well do it right and fix the root of the problem. My factory is 70 amp according to AdvanceAuto, this ones 165. Should help alot! For $150 cant beat it I guess.

The HO alt is a good start, but it will still lack the power you need at idle. remember that the peak output for your HO alt is rated at a certain RPM. Anything under that RPM will be a lower output. So you are cruzing around beating it and everything is fine, then you hit a red light and it all starts cutting out. Why? Because you also need battery power.

It is not an either / or issue. It is a combination of both that will correct your power issue. Add an HC1400 near the amps and you will eliminate the power issues.

You aren't running enough power to need both an alt and an extra battery, you will be fine. Just make sure that there are no wiring shortages causing you a bottleneck.
