So I managed to get a hold of 2 LMS Ultra 18"s and would like some input on enclosure design. I was thinking of building a smaller ported enclosure tuned low. Any one have any ideas?

damn! you have supra? what generation?

if so, there is no way to really put them in unless you take out the whole backseat and then you might be able to squeeze them in. get the max dimensions you are willing to give up for the box and then go from there.

One would be a whole lot more workable, and it's really all you'd need.

Well its not going into a supra. I have an explorer to work with which has a lot more space. It will also be getting 4kw each for power.

They like ports, but a sealed enclosure the same size as your "small, low tuned ported enclosure" would probably yield better results.

Because sound quality implies far more things than just a substage. And since the substage plays such a small portion of the sound, lots more things are more important

they will indeed perform nicely sealed, and they definitely do their best work in large ported enclosures. as audio stated, a sealed setup the same size as the small ported enclosure will more then likely yeild the best results. with the OP asking about a LSQ setup, why go with something that will get peaky instead of staying flat? and with a pair of 18s and 8kwrms, ported isn't needed. output will be there, and in spades.

i also agree that with that much power/sub on tap, LSQ, or anything sq, will be hard to achieve. your front stage will have to be huge to keep up with that, even turned down.

Front stage will consist of 2 sets of Alpine F#1 status 3-way components running full active. The idea is to run the subs turned down most of the time. Its not like I have to have 8kw going to my substage all the time. But I would like the option of having lots of output when I want it.

Since money obviously isn't the issue, I will suggest this again. Compression horns, and a very efficient midrange.

Hybrid Audio L8's in doors l4 in kicks and image dynamics ultra hlcd's. Only one set, adding more speakers in a front soundstage doesn't = louder and is horrible for sound quality.

Sorry but I think horns have a horrible sound to them. I like the smother sound of silk. I think two sets should be plenty lound from most I my listening. Also positioning of the front stage will be optimized so having multiple speakers up front shouldnt have a negative effect.

I'm just curious who installed the horns you heard?

Where were they aimed, how much power were they seeing and what kind of processing was used.

What kind of processing are you planning for your alpine f1 sets... 2x alpine h701's?

That was a while ago. ID horns in an sentra. Had about 100watts going to them. Dont know they just had a harsh sound to them. I wasnt impressed much.

Horns are absolutely amazing sounding when installed and tuned properly. I only suggested them b/c of their efficiency and your goal to try and keep up with two 18" tc sounds lms drivers.

The harshness was because they were aimed too high.

Ah good point. They were aimed up from under the dash. I'll try see if I can audition another setup and see if it sounds any better.

Thread jacking my own thread. But audio-neon if you dont mind me asking what were the specs on the TC10EOM box? I have a pair sitting at my place in boxes and was thinking of throwing them in my girls car for fun.

For SPL my box was 3.68 cubic feet before port displacement 70 sq inches of port tuned to 43 hz. My sq build was 2.6 cubic feet before port/driver displacement tuned to 31 hz.

Unless you're building line arrays in your dash, I don't see how you're getting around having two sets of point sources playing the same material It's hard enough getting a single 3-way set staging properly, it's frankly going to be a tuning nightmare trying to get two sets working together in the same environment. And for really not much benefit at all.

I would be prepaired to say that if you use 2 extremely amazing drivers and the best processing you can find, you would still have better results with one well build driver. If you including the timing tuning etc... then double that.

If you only want it to sound loud upfront and not accurate, and you don't care about imaging, or staging, or if this is just a show off car show type install go for it. I love seeing the over the top installs, and it would be fun to build, but it isn't so much fun to listen to.

If you want to have amazingly wonderfull reproduction of the recordings you will be listening to... then go 3 way front stage with some of the suggestions from the more experienced people here. Some of whom have won many SQ comps.....

Yeah man, your setup is really aiming towards SPL with two 18's and all that power. You'll never get those subs to blend properly with your fronts.

If your really trying for SQ you should take some note of the more experienced members recommendations.

Ok so who are they? If there are people who have won SQ comps please LMK who your are and what comps you have won. Id be much more apt to listen to someone with a background and has experiance.

I would exercize the search button, but maybe Dave and/or Ramos will show up or someone who can explain in technical terms(cough devildriver cough).

As for your comment I think you intended it differently than you said, but either way, case in point I would say Jim has more experience in how to work staging/imaging/tuning than 99% of people you will bump into in your life combined. I won't lie I'm no guru, nor can I explain to you exactly how it works... but the attitude of discrediting the people who have extended their experience to you isn't a good way to yeild positive results.
