High output 8" SQ sub for 10Lt/.35Cu sealed enclosure?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

As per my newbies post, I've been hanging around for some time, and have now registered to enjoy the full support and knowledge of the SSA members!

The sub and box size are not optional here, that's all I have to play with. For power I have 1400 @ 1 Ohm, 625 @ 2 Ohms or 312 @ 4 Ohms.

I was dead set on an Audiopulse EPIC 8, but have not been able to find one for love or money! So now I have a real dilemma... simply put, which sub should I buy? I am looking ultimately for SQ, but do want it to get loud whilst retaining that SQ. I have looked at the SoundSplinter, TREO SSi, MA Audio, Elemental Designs, Digital Designs, Image Dynamics, Eclipse and RE to name but a few and cannot make a decision.

Ideally I would like to be running with 625 @ 2 Ohms, but realise that some of those subs will not handle that amount of power. The thought of 312 @ 4 Ohms just doesn't do it for me!

Please help me! What should I buy??

Best regards, K22

300w on an 8 is pretty much all you can expect one to handle. The cone is so small that it doens't benefit from enclosure loading nearly as much as a larger sub can, so while there are 8s out there that might be able to thermally handle that kind of power, mechanically they'll get beat to death in a sealed box.

If SQ is your focus, cross off the MA Audio and RE subs. They are not in the league of the others. I'm not sure what Eclipse model you're looking at but they used TC Sounds (Audiopulse) as their OEM for their high end subs, as did Sound Splinter. The SS subs are not availiable for the foreseeable future. Most people on here hold the owner of eD in less than low regard, but I won't get inolved the that bit of e-drama. No experience with the Treo subs but I've never heard anything bad about them. DD can get loud, not sure how they'll do sealed in that airspace. ID isn't going to like that kind of power.

What are the dimensions of the space you have to work with. If you could find 2 subs that could work in that kind of volume, would you have room to mount them? What vehicle? What mounting location? You might be surprised where you can fit subs. Giving us some of those answers might allow some of us to come up with some ideas that you haven't thought of to go with something different or bigger.

a pair of the SoundSplinter orphan 8s ($165 each)would work in that airspace, be recieving around 500-550wrms and are very closely related to teh RL-i/Epic drivers. other then the 8w7, the rl-i/epic drivers are among the best available.

also, pay close attention to the soundsplinter forum. in another week or so, if the persons on his waiting list are unable to pick up their subs, Mike has a limited supply of Epics that he will be selling. all info can be found in his forum here.

also, the rl-i8 will be back. you'll just have to wait awhile longer. the timetable isn't set in stone and could be 6 months or so out.

wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee :slayer:
