i think i have a bad cell

Recommended Posts

the other day with ecromeans i noticed my voltage was low...

so today i went for a ride and i got in my car and my voltage was 11.5, with my a/c headlights and stereo on low.

i put in in gear with my foot on the break and i dip to 10 volts... :o o no.

i fliped a bitch and went back home.. i poped my hood and manualy triped my breaker, then my voltage jumped up to 13.8 with my lights on and the radio on low.. i checked my conections to all my cells.. thay were all tight... i reset myt breaker and i dip back down to 11. volts....

any one got any other ideas?

the only thing i can see is one of my three cells are bad... or my h/o alt is going out.

If its an optima their being made in a new build house according to my buddy who owns an ALT/Batt shop... They have a high failure rate with losing cells according to him. Thats why i switched over to oddyseys.

Yeah, sucks hopefully you sort it all out. Big fan of lincolns btw.... Miss my 90 cartier, lol. Should be warrantied to be honest. Check up on that might be able to get a replacement and sell it if you want to still switch brands.

check your alt output w/ dmm, with everything on thats been taking it down to low voltage. if alt is outputting 13.5 or better its fine then i would go to battery, then system wiring

Could always have Autozone load test the batteries and the alternator too. They do this for free and then you'll be able to tell exactly which batt is bad.

hey bigjon, if u really interested in Powermaster, i know a place where u can get their batts fully warranted and drop shipped to your house from Powermaster with free shipping. That should cut down the cost.

You can get D3100s for $311 and D5100s for $186. They only charge an $11 handling fee so if u order more than 1 batt, the rest of the batts only cost their sale price.

Guys, from what i can gather john knows what batt it is. He has all the bats isolated with breakers, when he turns off its breaker the voltage goes high meaning that battery is the load. Judging as he does wrecking he would have a charger lying around and could just charge the one batt to make sure.

thats the only way they are isolated? Then that may be why..

I'm not the expert in batts but am told to always keep the front and rear isolated with solenoids, especially when using different technology or branded batts.

Circuit breakers are not an isolation, they are a less tolerant fuse basically. Power runs through it all the time just like a fuse. So when the vehicle is off, it's the same as if it was on, all batts are joined together.

jegs.com for powermasters :) and theres no need for a isolater

i was saying for test purposes, isolators are USELESS in my opinion... He could do exactly what he did in that situation and pop the breaker to disconnect it from the circuit, same crap as the isolator but dual purpose...

i dont use isolaters,

i do use CB's

i think im gonnna use 1 D3100s..... or there is another model that weighs like 23 lbs and its 2400 amps. i may use 2 of those....

shizzon im gonna his you you up for that drop shipper.

auto zone pisses me off so bad.... when i go there i have to show the kidds how to use there own shit.

and the alt tester only goes up to 90 amps boooooooooo

thanks for the words guys.

thats what im saying shizzon is talking bout jegs.com for the powermaster batts. Free same day shipping on all orders over $250. $11-$12 handling fee. Thats where i got my batts from and i have 2 d3100 and a d1200 right now in the rear. There def some beefy ass batts get the job done quite well, and im running them on stock alt 90amps. Volts stay above 13.4 event playing hard for a wile and thats running 2 SAZ-3000D and 4 other smaller 200watt amps. I would say with your current alt 200amps if i remember correctly and batts, 1 d3100 would set you stright

that sucks if thats what it is, but seeing as more then one of your batts is not fully or near fully charged that sounds like the problem. You might have 3 bad batts event tho thats highly unlikely for all of them to go bad at the same time.

Tell me what all batteries you have in your car and which one is the starting battery.

all three of my cells were at 40 percent.. so i threw them each on its own charge.... then i checked for voltage output on my alt, its fine... i got two of my DMM's to check voltage i was sitting at 14.2....

but my stinger meter mounted in my car showed 13.0... so i adjusted it to 14.2... i thre the a/c the lights the everything at it... it never went below 13.0.... same as on both my DMM's...... so i shut it of and go to a metting... i get back home.. i start my car up and my stinger meter shows 15.6!.... i have yet to dmm it yet and see what the fuck is going on...

yellow top on my startup cell... i know i got it in the wrong place.

offbrand 1300 cca amg sealed in the back

red top in the back... i know it should be upfront.

i'm not tryin to dog ya but a VERY respectable person at Powermaster told me to always isolate the front from the rear with either isolators or solenoids as long as they were isolated. Of course he chose solenoids since they have no detectable voltage drop.

IF all batts were installed at same time AND are of the same brand and line, then yes, it may not be necessary but different brand, different technology, needs to be isolated because they slowly start to drain each other.

How slowly? I don't know but they will eventually kill each other off but the time it takes is unknown.
