need help building a box

Recommended Posts

Yup I finally made a decision and the sub is in the mail!!

My sx12 will be arriving soon and I need to build a box. I want to give it about 2.5 cubes after port displacement tuned to 34-35 hz. Building the box is not a problem, I got that part down. I just need help figuring port area/length. So any way you guys could help out would be awesome!!

Thanks

Tom

I can help. Do you want a slot port or a round port? I am assuming 3/4" wood will be used. Any specific dimesions you would like to see? I will whip up a normal ported box tonight as well as the pieces you need to cut. I would post it but I don't want anyone to steal me design:)

Also, how big do you want the box to be before displacement? Roughly 3.25? Between the sub and port displacement that should knock it down to roughly 2.5 cubes.

Gross Volume = 3.649

sub displacement = .16

port displacement = .241

Net Volume = 3.284

Port area = 28.274 (6" round)

Port length = 14.75"

tuning frequency = 35 Hz

dimensions

length = 27"

height = 13"

depth = 23"

There is one box for you. A little larger than you were looking for, but it is one. I will prob post a few more in the next coming days. Also, this was using 3/4" wood.

wow thanx for all the replies, but i need to specify a few things...

-i want a slot port

-itll be an odd shape because i have a reg cab truck, so im trying to keep it down to 2.5 cubes after port displacement (or "net volume" as u called it)

-i can figure out airspace of the rest of the box on my own (id need to so i can sqeeze as much out as i can) so all i need you guys' help with is the port dims

-^also because of that, you need not bother with the dims of pieces to cut (thanx anyway tho, that was very generous)

-ill be doing an inverse mount so the driver displacement should not be subtracted from the internal volume

-yes ill be using 3/4 mdf

I think this is all, but I probably forgot something. just tell me if i did

Thanks again so much for you guys' help!!

hmm, a reg. cab truck. Not a lot of room there at all. A slot port will be tough to do in a enclosure that small. I was messing around with some numbers and with a box that small there are a few difficulties.

With a box that small you can't have a lot of port area and have a sensible length port. And since you can't have a lot of port area the slot port starts to become very narrow. This leads to port noise.

It sounds like you know very well what you are doing. By any chance do you have dimensions for your box? Since it is a reg cab truck I have no idea of the space you have available, other than it isn't much:)

haha

well, i can get 4 cubes if i HAVE to but id lose 2 clicks and i really dont wanna drive like that but thats the most i can lose and still actually move my legs

i dont have dims because i need to kno gross volume before i can get dims (or else what would i be measuring haha)

hope that helps...

Thanks

Tom

what I meany by dims is the max size you can have. For instance, how tall can the box be, how wide and how deep. If you are inverting the sub the depth of the box will most likely be very shallow.

i see, sry abt the mix up

well its too late tonight to go measure so ill do it tommorrow and keep you guys posted!!

Thanks

i beileve his box will be "T" shaped...

part of the box behind his seats, the rest in a custom console thing...

the sub will be inverted between the seats, IIRC, so the port can either be

1) behind one seat facing up

2)if multiple ports, same as #1, only x2

3)the most likely, running the length of the console part..

did i remember correctly tim?

hope that helps petey(never mind the vent man...hehe..u know u want it!!) figure ur port..

i would help, but u gots plenty... :lol:

wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee :slayer:

well ive heard the "console port" will sound bad.....is this tru?

if it wont affect the sound then id like to do the console port, but if it will change the sound at all then ill put it behind the seat

Thanks

Tom

What I've seen that has worked decent is this. The sub is inverted between the seats. The port is then placed on a side wall of the box firing into the side of the truck.
