i think i wanna buy a hand gun

Recommended Posts

I will say to have fun and just ultra cheep ammo would be nice, but I always buy the tip top best I can afford, and I really would rather know I will spend more on ammo, and get one gun that "can" do anything I want, then to have multiple weapons. I'm sure my collection will grow. I will soon be taking the W to the range and then we can find a pistol for her. The .45 is just waaay too big.

She also has a huge problem with trying to pull the slide back too, and that isn't good when you need to for personal defense.

Technique can go a long way toward working the action. She using an overhand grip with the fingers and palm or a pinch grip with the thumb and side of the index finger? A 9mm will have a lighter recoil spring usually; I'm assuming that you knew that though.

But, other than working jams, which shouldn't happen with a gun you're trusting for defense, there isn't another reason I can think of to work the slide in a defensive situation.

I leave it loaded but I don't leave one in the chamber, so to be ready slide needs to come back. The hammer is probably harder for her to work than the slide, as I think I have the tightest wound and sharpest metal points on a .45 ever. I did relearn a technique for cocking over hand where you push the pistol instead of pull the slide. Pushing the arm has 4 times the strength of pulling.

We will have to see how she works with the XD. I really like the fact that with the XD in the dark at 3am I can grab the gun and just feel if I'm ready to go or not. I think the visual + physical cues to let you know what's going on with the gun is imparitive. Would I trade in my belovid 1911... probably not... but the .40 I held and the .45 I have shot in the XD both made me happy.

honestly I would never fire steel cased rounds from an AR or any really nice weapon. But the sportmans guide has brass for cheep and super sales once and a while..... I just would feel bad running steel through a really nice AR I think.

The USP was replaced a few years ago. The replacement is basically the same gun still. I completely agree with keeping a shotgun for home defense, in fact I have one. If the sound of the pump action gong doesn't scare them off, you're gonna need to use the gun, too. The only problem with a shotgun is where to keep it that it will be handy should you need it. It doesn't exactly fit in the nightstand.

I started off with an air gun as well. The first real gun I ever owned was the 20 ga that I still have. There's only one way to learn about guns and that's to be around them. Nothing wrong with wheelguns, but they're really not any more practical than autos.

dem beats- where are you finding larger caliber ammo for $.44 a round. Even surplus 5.56 in bulk is over $.50 a round here locally. Other than .22LR that's usually the cheapest rifle ammo out there.

only problem with shotgun for home is recoil. and for a beginner, that recoil can spell the end of shooting. that said, most everyone has shot a shotgun at one point or another in their life.

ammuntiontogo.com is your friend! i just picked up 500rds of 45acp (cci blazer aluminum) for $165 shipped to my door. got it in two days.

Winchester white box is only $30 per 100 rnds at Wally world. If my 1911 wasn't in pieces right now I'd pick some up. Probably will still pick some up. Ammo prices are only climbing with the price of copper. I quit buying Blazer unless I can't find anything else. Eventually I'll start relaoding so I usually collect my brass. Can't reload the Blazer Al cases. Bass Pro had Hornady JHP for $17/25 for .45 and $18/25 for 9mm. Got 4 boxes of each last night. Going back today to pick up a plinking gun. Trying to decide between the SIG Mosquito or a S&W 22A. The S&W is a standard .22 target pistol complete with full length optics rail. The SIG is built on the same platform as all the normal SIG handguns so I think it would make a better practice pistol.

Need to find someone local to sand blast my 1911 frame so I can Gun Kote it. Replacing a lot of the wear items and bringing it away from GI spec a bit. Replacing the trigger, the mainspring and housing, the grip safety, the sear spring and adding an ambi safety. Been shooting so long left handed with a right handed gun that working the safety on the SR9 the correct way has taken some getting used to. Got new grips for it last night. Pachmayr rosewood panels with the rubber grip panel that wraps across the front strap. They look really nice. Much nicer than the cheap plastics that came with the gun. Need to finalize my Brownells order with all my parts.

I have never had any issues with recoil on a 12 gauge..... I'm a BIG guy though... And I suppose if you are talking slugs.. Then that's different.

I never did respond to the shotgun thing... I completely agree with the shotgun being the best for home defence too, but you have hit the nail on the head with the nightstand talk. That and the lady feels akward with it. I hope when she comes to the range she becomes more relaxed. I plan to bring the shotgun too. We have a beautiful pistol grip folding stock so it's a bit more accessable, but technicaly it's my roomates and it stays in his room 99% of the time. Shit if he brought over all his guns, with the 2-3 AKs and the 7mm and the other 1911... we would have no room left!

make sure it's not a first gen mosquito, heard stories about it not being reliable. i've wanted one since they came out, but the early version steered me away. i just recently picked up a ruger mkIII for a plinker. the targert version comes with a rail to add on, which i did, and it currently sports a barska red dot. i might be trying to wheel and deal for a walther p22 though. add another plinker!!

the blazer al i picked up for my mandatory 40hr course to be an LEO. not worried about reloading it, and on can't even find WWB for a .45acp that cheap here locally.

People are ignorant about steel case ammo. They base thier opinoins on heresay.

9000+ rounds through one of my AKs with no chamber damage, at all.

I even reload the boxer primed 45 ACP steel case ammo... works fine, my Lee carbide dies don't even know the difference...

I have a Rock River arms AR-15 that has seen upwards of few thousand rounds also...

I also ended up with a Ruger. Mk III 22/45 Target model for me. Different grip angle to closely match the 1911 angle. The more I looked into the Mosquito the more bad things I heard about jamming. Sad for a company known to make some of the most reliable pistols on the market. I've yet to hear anything good about the Walthers either. Similar jamming issues. Seen threads on other websites on how to make them shoot reliably but not something that I really want to deal with for a gun purchased for enjoyable and reliable shooting.

I think that .45 was $30 or $35 for 100rds WWB at Walmart here.

Found a gunsmith to take care of media blasting. Should have the frame back on Wed. After that I'll have her back together as soon as my Brownell's order comes in. I'll need to fit the new grip safety and thumb safety and then coat the gun and get her back together. Should look and handle a far cry different when I'm done.

Finally got out to the desert yesterday afternoon. Ran easily 200 rnds through the .22, 2 mags through the M&P and 66 rnds through the SR9. The wife really liked the .22 which is why I bought it in the first place. Once she's more comfortable with that we'll move her up to a real gun. She fired about 5 rounds through the M&P and didn't like it, but she was really timid with the .22 at first as well. She'll come around. She quit shooting when the wind started to pick up.

I really need to practice more. I put every round in a mag into an old propane cylinder at around 25yds with the SR9 but I used to be able to hit clays at that range consistently. By the time we left I was getting pretty good with the .22 at range with 75% of my shots hitting a 10" target at 40+yds. Had fun chasing cans in the wind with it, it's a real bitch to hit a moving soda can outside of 25 yds with a handgun! I might go out again this afternoon but I really need to get the new HU in the truck so we'll have DVD and XM for the drive to FL at the end of the week.

watch the grip frame on the 22/45. i steered away from it due to the fact it can come loose with heavy use. you'll notice a wobble between grip frame and reciever.

otherwise, i love my mkIII!!!

Only see that being an issue if I fully disassemble it every time I shoot it. Hell I had to knock the shit out of it with a rubber mallet (which is what the manual said to do) to get the grip frame separated from the barrel. I don't see much benefit to tearing it all the way down often and the fit is metal on metal.

i hope you're right. i'm just repeating what my guy at the gun shop told me when i bought my mkIII. he steered me towards the regular mkIII, which is cheaper, because of the frame to reciever issue.

speaking of guns, i purchased my duty shotgun today. a winchester 1200, with custom 19" barrel. i also bought a custom 19" barrel for my 20g mossberg 500. $165 out the door for both, and i'd say more, but you never know who's reading, lol.

GOt the 1911 back from the gunsmith. Spent the afternoon fitting a highrise beavertail and applying the new finish. Really happy with the finish. The satin black with stainless trigger, hammer, barrel bushing, grip safety and mainspring housing and rosewood and black rubber grips looks really nice. Considering taking the slide in to get stripped as well. Not sure what color I'll do the slide. Need to get an ambi safety and tweak the hammer/grip safety clearance a little and she should be GTG.
