component system

Recommended Posts

i am in the market to buy a whole new setup for my car. i have no knowledge of any good component systems and i really need to be pointed in the right direction.

my car takes 5x7's in the front and 6x9's in the back. in the rear i will be using 6x9's but in the front i want to run something other then a 5x7. maybe a mid driver.

i want to stay with a component in the front but can u match components with mids? or r they the same.

i have been looking at boston acoustic for the speakers and maybe a sundown 100.4 to power them. maybe an mtx amp.

i am willing to spend around 800 for the entire setup.

any suggestions on other manufacturers?

You should be able to build some baffles for the front speakers and fit either 5.25" or 6.25" components. For 800 you can make some pretty incredible DIY setups. Some other dudes should chime in with recommendations on that, as I'm not as familiar with that as they are.

Ditch the rear speakers, they're unneeded.

As far as what speakers to choose, zaphaudio.com is a good place to start getting familiar with the big names out there.

We need to understand your installation capabilities and the limitations of your ride as well. One thing is for sure you don't want 5x7's up front nor 6x9's in the rear...for that matter you don't really want anything in the rear.

nothing in the rear? wtf? it is a lincoln town car. so all the speakers go in the front of the car? never heard of that. what is diy? sorry i am sorry retarded to the audiophile lingo.

what setup would you recommend for the price range i have. also i am coming from some polk audio 6x9's and 5x7's. i thought it sounded good but i guess i have no idea.

DIY stands for Do It Yourself. Meaning instead of buying an off-the-shelf speaker system already packaged together, you buy the speakers and crossovers all separate and piece it together yourself. Often you can get better results this way.

I know M5 and a bunch of others are big proponents of front-only sound, but I like rear fill in my car. It's personal preference. I don't think you need anything more than a pair of coaxials in the back, though. I'd definitely spend the most money on the front stage. Do you know if you like metal or silk tweeters? Are you more after good midrange clarity or good midbass kick? These kinds of questions can help narrow down which speakers would be good for you.

If you don't want to do the pieced together system, we can offer some component sets. But 5x7 component sets are both hard to come by and not great. So do you think you can build some baffles to change that 5x7 hole into a 5.25 or 6.5" round hole? It simply requires cutting out a piece of wood and cutting the new speaker's size inside of it, and sticking that in the factory spot.

D=do I=it Y=yourself When they say diy they mean picking up a pair of speakers (commonly 6.5'') dedicated to midbass and a pair of tweeters for the highs and running them active. Active means no passive crossover, so your amp or your headunit does the crossover and eq'ing. I have no rear fill right now but it is a small pickup so I definitely couldnt tell the difference. Most knowledgeable people on here will push the idea of spending all of your speaker budget on the front and ditching the rear, and I agree with them. Why have two sets of average speakers when you can have an awesome front stage?

edit: ahhh KU40 beat me to it

yeah i am looking now at the website a member suggested to me. silk tweeters would be my preference. i cant handle that ear piercing sound. to much for me. but i am looking to have a complete setup. i think that i am gonna go with 6.5 or 7's in the front and rear along with tweeters. is there any difference 5.25, 5.5, 6.5 or 7's other then size?

all this is information i s extremely interesting. so much to be learned and so long have i thought in an ignorant way with car audio. 5x7's lol. i thought them things were the chit. guess not. after this post when i am ready to buy this stuff i will be bombarding this forum with hundreds of questions. so thats it for now.

The biggest difference is typically in midbass capability. Generically speaking (ie all other things equal) a larger cone midrange will play lower. Obviously there are design parameters that you can alter so this isn't the case which is why I prefaced the all other things equal/.
