Time to upgrade the electrical system

Recommended Posts

Ok so I have done the Big 3. Have a jeep grand cherokee. Found out the alt stock is 110amps. I am running a 100.4 amp and an alpine mrd1005d. Looking to get a deep cycle battery up front and a bigger alt. Battery i have up there now is 11 long and 7.5 wide. I looked at the battery basket and measured 13 long. I was thinking a powermaster d3100 up front. Just am trying to brainstorm some ideas and figure out a few different product choices. Also the Sea tweeters sound very nice. Barely need any power to get loud which really surprised me. Almost got those Excel mids dialed in and the midrange clarity is def worth it.

Any budget restrictions? Probably not since you're thinking of Powermaster. Another option is a Deka Intimidator.

H/O alts range from 280-600 for most cars.. Some of the newer computer controlled alts cost more. Ohio Gen is normally on the more expensive side, but I have yet to see one fail from poor production.

Would a good deep cycle and my stock alt (110amp) plus big 3 be enough for my amps? Also got a quote from Excessive and $355 shipped for 200 amp alt. Quality product?

Well my dad has finally given me permission to upgrade my electrical system correctly. 200 amp alternator from excessive and I am going to get a deep cycle battery up front. My system isn't that ridiculous when it comes to watts - alpine mrd1005 and the sundown 100.4. I am looking at the Powermaster 2700 or the Kinetik 2000. Opinions? My stock alt is 120amps and I am somewhat hesitant in getting the alt because I feel with the battery it will be ok. The only thing is I don't want to end up hurting the battery or the current alt in the car now. Just am looking for some advice/guidance.

do u have dimming now?

Sit there at idle and jam and see if your lights dim.

If they do, rev the tach up to 2,000 rpm or if you do not have a tach, just rev it up and keep it there, kinda loud but nothing too severely loud.

Play a constant test tone for about 10 seconds when keeping it revved up.

your lights may dim for a split second when the test tone tone comes in and should recover quickly.

While the test tone is playing for about 10 sec, immediately pause it or stop and see if your lights get brighter.

If they don't, then i don't think you need an upgrade.

Yes i have dimming. Also have a volt meter and i see the battery voltage drop down to around low 12s.

is that just when you idle though? I think you should be fine. I'd replace/upgrade the battery and wiring first if anything, especially if the battery is 5+ years old (not sure how old your Jeep is). Those are generally much cheaper. I got an Optima red top deep cycle knockoff from Napa for 60 dollars and it noticeably improved my charging system on my old car.
