SSD problems

Hey Scott or Nick,

Ive tried emailing both of you guys but anyways my sub is making some rattling noise, sounds like it is coming from inside the sub. I have it in a 2.25cuft box tuned @33hz powered by a kicker zx1000.1 the gain is 1/3 the way up and the bass boost is on zero. I never played any test tones just daily music. When I first had it hooked up it sounded like it was working perfect then once i turned up the volume on my head unit about halfway 35 out of 60 my friend noticed a rattling noise and we both put our ears up to it and it sounds like something is loose in the sub. What can we do to get this fixed?? Please get back to me it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

So you just turned your gain knob? You didn't set the amplifier correctly? You're probably sending too much power to the subwoofer. Either bottoming it out or causing the Tinsel leads to slap.

Have you taken it out of the box to inspect it visually yet?

No i set the gain about 1/3 the way up when i first hooked it up because I only have the copper coil and didnt want to take any chances. Yes everything on the amp is set accordingly.I am only sending about 700-800rms to the sub. I took it out of the box nothing is visually wrong with no burnt voice coils or anything nothing is loose but when it was played it sounded like something was loose inside the sub maybe like the copper coil or something. I only played the first day that it was hooked up and took it all out because i didnt want to make anything worse. Any ideas??

You're not really getting me on the whole gain thing.

You have no idea how much power you are actually sending to the sub. The gain knob doesn't tell you that. A DMM will, and an oscilloscope will tell you if it's a clean signal that isn't clipping.

I'd back the gain down and see if the problem persists. You're probably just overdriving the subwoofer due to too much power.

I think something was wrong with the sub. I have heard and I do not think it is the gain at all. Before this happened there was no distortion at all it was sounding great then the next day playing a little lower song sounded like there was a rattle and now you can hear it when ever volume is turned up(gain can be all the way down). I have 2 12" ssds running off a kicker zx2500.1 and I have not had any problems with the power I am sending them.

If you were playing a 'little lower song' odds are you played a song that was below tuning of the enclosure and the sub unloaded...

sub sonic filter is set all the way down and the lowest song that i played it to was white girl by young jeezy the box is tuned to 33hz so i know it couldnt have been that it started to make that rattling noise on probably a 40hz song but i can send some pics but there is nothing that you can see that is visually wrong with it

Thats a big amp for two ssd subs

Thats a problem. having the ssf all the way down in a ported enclosure and powered by a kicker 2500. All of those things are a compounding problem for you.

These are the probable causes to your failure:

1) Ported box with ssf all the way down is NOT guarding against over excursion

2) Two SSDs that have an 800wrms rating each so 1600 total with a Kicker 2500 powering them

just out of curiousity, have you checked and made sure the box was ok? maybe something broke inside the box, or an outside wall? it'll make that same kind of sound.

did you smell any thing funky during all of this coming from the sub?

Yes i checked the box and everything is fine. Trust me guys in not an idiot i know what im doing and exactly everything is fine on the amp and box, there is deffinifitly something wrong with my sub, just like my friend with the 2 ssd powered by the kicker zx2500 he has each sub getting just about the same power as mine was and that was about 900rms and his system sound great and is really loud, and trust me there is something wrong with my sub, I would just like to send it in and have Nick or Scott look at it and see what we can do together to try and fix it. Thats all I am asking for, not what everybody thinks and does not know how my setup is

I think your a little confused about the setup.

I have the 2 12" ssds with the kicker zx2500.1.

He has the 1 12" ssd with the kicker zx1000.1

There was no smell to the sub and we took it out to look in the box and saw nothing.

Used my CD to test it out with and I have bumped that CD for a while, with

no damage to my subs at all.

I'm deffinately not confused. you were overpowering those subs in a ported box without the ssf adjusted properly to prevent damage to your equipment

I typed that wrong i meant to say my sub sonic filter was on sorry but TOOLOUD4YOU is not the one with the problem his setup is fine and it is really nice sounding and pounding lows. I am the one with the problem I have 12" SSD with the copper coil powered of the Kicker zx1000.1 my sub was only getting about 800-900 rms for two day and then some nasty rattling noise started to form, so we took the sub out of the box, inspected everything we could on it nothing was wrong visually, there was no nasty smell, the box is fine no rattling from the box. Me and my friend TOOLOUD4YOU are the ones who did all of this, we even free aired it at very low volumes and we could hear the rattling coming from the inside of the sub. So i know it deff not over powered, it sounds like something is loose. Like I said all I want is to send my sub in and have Scott or Nick check it out and tell me what exactly is wrong with it and then we can try and do something to fix it.
