ohm understanding

Recommended Posts

im still learning a bit here with the audio but im curious as to how to match the ohms so im gonna use an example then ask the question.

lets say i have these subs....

Two 10" 1200watt subs at 4 ohms

and

Two 12" 1300watt subs at 4 ohms

Now does that mean i need 1 amp with 4 ohms with a splitter that goes into the subs? or would i need 2 amps both with 4 ohms each? or is there something else i can do??

and the amps need to put out enough watts to match the subs right?

thanks in advance for any help.

First off, are these four subs SVC or DVC?

No man, please do not feel like an idiot. I am no expert myself LOl

SVC = Single voice coil DVC = Dual voice coil

On a SVC sub you will have one + terminal and one - terminal

A DVC will have two of each.

Are you planning on using all four of these subs?

What kind of amp are you planning on using?

ok it only says 4 ohm voice coil, so im assuming there SVC, i havnt chosen an amp yet and yes im panning on using 4 subs, not neccasrily the 2 1200watt and the 2 1300watt but i need 4 subs. basicly just trying to figure out the subs then find a matchable amp, but for my set up i kinda want to do it with 2 amps if possible.

but in order to choose the amp i need to figure out which subs i want and i also need to figure out how the whole ohm matching thing works. cause i know im supposed to match the subs ohm with amp ohm, but does that mean if my sub is 4 ohms does my amp have to be 4 ohms? and if my amp is 4 ohms does that mean ill need to have 2 amps per sub or can it split into two subs that are 4 ohm....like cna 1 4 ohm amp, power 2, 4 ohm subs?

Okay heres the next question, are you going to buy a mono(1 channel), 2 or, 4 channel amp? What kind of money are going to spend on the amp?

Are you building your own box for the subs? A wall? What kind of car or, SUV?

You have to set a budget for your setup even if it is one step at a time.

Xplod subs

10" XS-L104P5B

12" XS-L124P5B

(two of each)

and like i said i didn't have an amp picked out yet, also no decisions are finally as im still trying to understand everything.

This is more or less a paper project to help me understand how it all works out.

ignore price and everything atm, its only a paper project to help me understand how it all works, ill then later on choose my set up i want. :)

can i get a quick explanation of these btw lol. 2/1 channel amp, 4/3 channel amp?? whats that mean exactly? 2 channel at 1 somthing and 4 channel at 3 something?

Ok, First things first stay away from sony subs, they are garbage! Pay attention to RMS values as max or peak numbers are almost meaningless. Most people will also recommend you do not mix subs, it can cause cancelation I believe is the reaso, get four of the same type and size of subs your results will be better. If your unsure of good brands post what your looking for SPL(straight loud), SQ (sound quality), or LSQ (sound quality that can get loud). I'm guessing your looking for either spl or LSQ with four subs. Also post a budget of what you want to spend.

alright thanks for all the help and yeah ive been reading that site there, its just all die-hard and im not following some of the stuff, thats why i ask here, itd help better if it used car audio chit for its examples lol. im not much of a reading learning person i need diagrams, pictures chit like that. but like i said i probably wont get sony stuff for my set up im an alpine person.

and you say dont mix sub types what if the subs are connected to different amps? they wont be mixed would they? like 1 amp runs the 12" and one amp runs with the 10"?

This is where the budget thing comes into play. A 1 channel amp only has a mono channel( 1 speaker output) A 2 channel has a left and right channel(stereo) and can more than likely be bridged into a mono channel at 4ohms(some at 2 ohms or less but you must be sure that it is recommended by the manufacturer of the amp) A 4 channel amp is two channels front and two channels rear.

A really good learning resource can be found at; http://www.the12volt.com/

There is a boatload of info there. It covers alot!

Once you start getting an idea of what you want there is a great for sale section on this site.

This is the best advice i've got at this point.

For your question about ohms 4 single voice coil 4ohm subs can be wired for either 1 or 4 ohms. Look for an amp that is rated for the sum of the RMS ratings of the subs at either of these values. Be aware that an amp running at 1 ohm will get warmer than one running at 2 or 4 ohms, but will usually be cheaper for the power (1000W at 1ohm vs 1000w at 4 ohms).

There are plenty of good sites that explain most terminology and theories in language that;s easily understood.

and www.bcae1.com are both excellent learning tools.

You're welcome man. Like I said, the 12 volt has quite a few diagrams that will be really helpful.

One thing that I should tell you is that,

Once you dip your feet into audio, it will become a passion and you will always want to learn more and, try different setups.

Welcome to a brave new world.

Check these guys out for subs. http://www.ascendantaudio.com/

I run their Assassins and I love them. The best quality for the money hands down IMO

You should really start over.

Your thread should be more about asking for help picking your gear, as at the moment you can't see the trees from the forest and are going to get confused. In order to help, we need to know:

Goals, space, budget, music preferences, installation experience (or if you are paying someone), what you currently own, what kind of car, aiming, location of drivers going into the car and so on. If you give us this all of a sudden things will get much more helpful.
