how should i set up a surround sound in my room?

Recommended Posts

dont know where i should place speakers in this situation...i promise i will listen to your ideas Jim and M5 LOL

not looking to spend a ton, but i want a decent little system. never really watch movies much, just watch tv at night before going to bed, etc. never really going to play it very loud unless i happen to be watching a movie.

anyways, this is where my tv is, and where my bed. how would i place the speakers?

notice how the tv isnt on a flat wall, i have a ceiling mount and its mounted in the corner of my room angled towards my bed. the mount comes tomorow so ill get pics after i install it. but i know the L and R front speakers are supposed to be firing at you as the tv is correct? would i angle the speakers too?

then how would i do the rear speakers?

dont laugh at my diagram lol

this is how i have the tv now until my mount gets in.

my old tv, this is where the 42" will be (close to the ceiiling) when the mount gets in.

notice i dont have much wall space to the right of the tv,,,,entrance to the bathroom...

also, those speakers on the tv are removable and will be removed when i mount it, and get a HT system. the speakers resemble an Ass. LOL

i think itll look cleaner without them anyways.

on a side note, i LOVE the tv.. great tv for the price. (1,099) 1080P.. 42" lcd, etc.

out the door it was $1,450 with tax, and a 5 year plan. the plan was 370 bux! but i had to get it, i wouldnt feel safe without getting it, if something goes wrong in a year and 1 day after the manf warr is up, i'd have to pay for it, although reviews on these Vizio's seem pretty good.

Your setup screams 2 chn only, rears won't really be a benefit.

Also putting your TV up high isn't exactly neck friendly

Room is too small to need 5.1.

Sean is right about TV height as well, at no time should any part of the TV be over 6' high. Otherwise it would be VERY uncomfortable to watch.

its actually not bad, when im laying in bed its perfect. no strain on the neck what so ever. sitting in a chair would be, but when i watch tv, its when im laying in bed.

i will stick with 2 channel. i figured rears wouldnt work in this situation.

since i dont have to spend the extra money on rear speakers, lets throw together a nice (still not too expensive) 2 channel system :) should i do a DIY setup or what? my desk is right under where the tv will be, with my PC, etc, so i can run my HDMI cable from the PC to the TV, so i can use the wireless keyboard and mouse if i wanna lay in bed and use the computer on the tv. im building my desk soon (after i finish my wall lol) out of partical board, and then covering it in 1/8" or some kind of thin stainable wood grain type birch or something. its just going to be a simple desk, with shelves on top, just something to fit in that corner, the desk i have now sticks past the base boards around the bathroom entrance, etc.. so it wont be much $ or work to build a desk to my specs. im putting some speakers in it too :) its for my PC though. thats another story LOL..they're some speaker boxes i took apart, just gonna build the same size enclosures, but implement them into the desk rather than having the boxes taking up room

I'd just build a simple 6.5" two-way from Zaph or somewhere else. TV is not a demanding task at all.

If I were you, though, I'd save the hassle of having two seperate systems in one room and just build something nice for both the TV and PC together.

i might, but i already have the speaker boxes for my PC..

m5, not sure on the budget yet. what would u suggest? not a ton as i said its only for tv..no hd dvds, nothin like that...just want something a little better and louder than the speaker bar on the tv.

I'd suggest you give us a budget. My idea of not a ton and yours are perhaps way different.

I'd just build some MT speakers. Maybe just a simple 6.5" and tweeter like Jim suggested. I really like the Dayton References, which can be had on Partsexpress for I think 35-40. Or upper level Vifa's, but I don't know if they sell them on PE anymore (I have Vifa MG's and a peerless soft dome tweet in my surrounds and I love them. I like the tweet better than the Dayton classics I have on my fronts. Wish I'da spent the extra few bucks and upgraded). Then just get a basic receiver with enough inputs to handle your TV, PC, dvd player, VHS, beta player, atari, ps3, whatever. You could probably find a 2 channel on ebay or at a used electronics store or something for 100, and spend only about 200 on the whole deal.

oh yeah, and then you can build or buy some little like 3' stands to set them on. Maybe one just to the right of your bathroom door there and the other just to the left of the tv.
