Memphis PR104 Review

Recommended Posts

well, as some of seen the pics..now it's time for a review..

i bought the sub for $50 just so i could add some low end. i chose the pr becuz scott (owner radioactivity) said they kicked ass for cheap subs, personally i thought he was full of chit...but read on..

The Install

the sub is in the recommened 1ft^3 with 6in^2 of port. yep just 6 square inches! the only thing i changed was port length, as memphis recommends a 40 hz tuning, i added 3/4" to the port length, hopefully bringing it down somewhere around 35-37 hz.

The Power

yeah right!! it's getting fed a rated 70 wrms @ 4 ohm from a memphis pr 140. fred (local memphis rep) says the amp is actually closer to 125 wrms..but i think if it's 100wrms it's lucky.

The Vehicle

2004 chevy silverado x-cab z-71. pretty much what is in my sig.

The Look

a stamped steel chrome basket, black cone and magnet. looks good while looking inexpensive. built like a light duty tank. it's more solid then meets the eye..good ole memphis quality.

The Listen

for a 10 with 70 watts..it gets low. it handles lil john with ease. follow that up with POD..no problem. hammers out bass notes like it was a lot bigger sub, kicks out kick drums like it was sealed. absolutely no overhang. u can hear the music then if the urge strikes, u can hear the boom!

The Verdict

move over comp vr's, there is a new budget sub in town!!! while it's not going to set records in my install, most ppl think i'm running 200-250 watts. some think two 10's sealed. this thing has just amazed me. now, don't get me wrong..this sub isn't meant for all out 200 in^2 of port, 6ft^3 of box and 4000 wrms. it was meant for someone looking for more then factory, someone looking for bass at a great price but keeping a brand name..and it fills them shoes well. for someone on a budget, say around $150 for a pair, u would be hard pressed to find a better sub..

The Rating

look/build: 3.75 outa 5 ..built like a tank, but with the chrome reminds me of a legacy of something, but this is a personal preferance..if u like chrome, u'll like the look

sound quality: 5 outa 5..has yet to make anything sound bad..really efficient sub ..great for any sq install

spl: 4 outa 5..considering that it's just getting 70 wrms, this sub is loud!with the full 200wrms it's rated for, i imagine a 5 outa 5 would have been in order..like i said, in low power applications..this thing is awesome

overall: 4.5 outa 5.. i'd recommend this sub to anyone anytime..especially if they fit the low power, low budget, little space but want bass crowd..this sub delivers in spades. it actually seems louder in low power situations ,200 wrms or less, then a memphis hpo. it's just a super efficient sub and gets loud with little juice. definitely a sub worth looking into if ur on a tight budget..

btw, scott was right, these are badass little subs!!

Those are may favorite budget subs bar none. Very good quality and very little price. Here is a pic of a buddy's subs. They were going in a wall until his car crapped the bed. Funny how that works isn't it.

i'm putting three pr12's in a ranger soon..

i know of a isuzu rodeo (4 door) with a pair of 15's off a 600 watt sony and it's silly loud and low

awesome little subs for hardly any money...plus if bought from a dealer, the 4 year warranty ain't bad!!
