New to forum, Coming from a Polk SR 10"

Recommended Posts

OK, so first off I realize this a very redundant post, as I myself, even new to this forum have read several of these, and I apologize. So I currently have a 10" Polk Signature Reference series sub in a small (around 1-1.1 cubic feet, pre-fab) sealed enclosure with about 500 watts running to it from a Fosgate amp.

So I've read numerous reviews on the Fi subs on here, in particular the SSD and the Q series. I am leaning towards an SSD series in a 12". Coming from the setup I have I want to know what kind of gains I will receive in terms of output stepping up to a SSD 12", or any 12" for that matter. I am still wanting to go with a small sealed enclosure, and from what I have read the SSD seems to excel in this type of enclosure. I am looking for more for of an SQ oriented setup, not an audiophile grade SQ setup (as I've seen some get flamed b/c they said they wanted an SQ set-up), its just that I am wanting to get a little more kick added to my kick drum if you know what I mean.

I listen to pretty much 99 percent rock... Metallica, Skynyrd, Pink Floyd, Finger Eleven, Tool, etc... And I am also looking for a suggestion on a good amp to pair with this sub, in the $200-$300 price range, maybe more if that won't get me a decent amp.

Thank you in advance for any replies and I must say there seem to be a lot of great people on this forum and a lot of people with a ton of knowledge about car audio, and I hope to gain some knowledge by listening to you guys.

Well I have never heard a SSD but i noticed you listed Tool on your artist list there, all I can say is I have a Q10 and its the only sub I'v heard around hear that can play the kick drum perfectly. Any other sub just sound like BAAH! From what it sounds like to me, Id look at a Q12. Whats it going in and what are you powering it with?

Yeah I love Tool, and my Polk SR stumbles a bit when playing it. I was thinking about buying a new amp to go along with it, maybe a Sundown. It seems like a lot of people have those and like them. Probably a SAE-1000D or the 1500D if it ever gets back in stock. As for my car, it will going in the trunk of a 1998 Monte Carlo.

i listen to tool and some other rocks as well. i think the ssd excels really with all varieties of music. i got it fully loaded and coming from two dual 12" subs, my one 12" ssd is so much better, in terms of SQ and bass.

Are both of you running in a sealed setup or ported?

Nothing that says that "audiophile SQ" (whatever that means) can't play Tool either ;)

I'm honestly kind of surprised about what you said about the SR. Just curious, where do you have the LP Xover set? Are you sure the box is well-sealed?

From what you said, it sounds like you need to improve your midbass more than your subbass. The kick from the kickdrums should be coming from the midbasses, in front of you, vs. from the sub behind you.

What I meant by audiophile SQ was that this is by no means a full on SQ setup that I have. I am positive that the box is well sealed, but as for the LP Xover, I haven't looked at it in soo long I honestly can't remember lol.

As for the other speakers, the two in the doors are stock, and I replaced the rears with rockford fosgate 6x9's, a loooong time ago, all running of my pioneer HU's power. I guess a better way to phrase it is that I am lacking the "impact" I want and am looking for more. Sorry for being so general, and as if you couldn't already tell I know little to nothing about car audio, so go easy on me.

Well, there's your problem :)

I would hold on to the sub you have for now.

Upgrade the front speakers, thoroughly sound deaden/seal the doors, add an amp to the front speakers...and I bet you'll get a lot more of the "impact" you feel is missing. There's no way head unit power to stock speakers is going to give you the dynamic range and punch you're wanting from kickdrums. Simply adding another kind of sub to the mix right now isn't going to be a solution.

I agree with JimJ. When I upgraded from factory speakers I noticed a night and day difference. THEN when I put an amplifier to them it was ANOTHER night and day difference.
