PS: Just curious about the design, information is just to satisfy my curiosity. I have been considering doing some more custom work in the future, find it pretty cool.

The idea is the more venting the better! Radial venting drilled into the pole circumference blows cold air directly onto the sides of the voice coil former. The air is taken in through the center pole vent and out the radial vents. Venting the pole to a subwoofer is a give take scenario. When a vent is machined down the center of the pole piece it takes some of the metal mass that is coming through the front plate and creating the magnetic field in the motors gap. In order to take the power that LB will be running to this single sub we felt that extra venting definitely wouldn't hurt!

We laminated a two layer dust cover together for the MOAB.

A lot of larger Selenium, JBL, B&C woofers use a 4" VC, but they require very different enclosures than what most "car" woofers are optimized for.

I think for your application, a focus on drawing air in from above the top plate while keeping as much BL as possible (ie. no pole vent) might have been better. At least that is the general opinion of Dr. Klippel and a few others. But I shouldn't say anything since it could be exactly what they were looking for.

There are quite a few companies that use a 4" VC in car audio...mostly for SPL competition. The net result is typically higher packing density in the gap and more BL; usually the power handling is improved as well, but not always.

Lots of different VC OD's used.

the cone is a special Honeycomb / resin composite w/ Kevlar coating, makes it liter & stiffer than a pule cone !

not meant for musical reproduction but well suited for SPL.

they have a new sub for 08' it's a woven carbon fiber w/ pulp backing...
