Ok i am in the need of a new alternator for my truck. The stock one that i have is a 65 amp model. My future plans are 2 10" or 12" icons, and 2 1000 sundowns, or 1 1500 soundown. I am planning on getting my alt rebuilt to 150 amps, or get a 200 amp powermaster. I'll be running between 2 and 4 batteries in my bed box(Deka Intimidator Battery's for now). Ill be running atleast one run of 1/0 or 2/0 to each battery in the back (maybe overkill, but i dont want there to be a big a drop in the voltage). I have talked to a couple of mechanics and they all say that if i upgrade my alternator to that many amps that i will be running the chance of catching my truck on fire due to it being such high amps and the wires and my ecm not being able to handle it. I keep on telling them that if i get the powermaster i will be using the post on the back of the alternator and hooking that up directly to my back battieres, with one wire going to my starter battery or running the wires from my starter battery to the back batteries if the post is not long enough. I will be doing the big 3 and grounding the back ones to the frame. Do i need to worry about my truck catching on fire, or are they just trying to scare me from doing this?

But I could also take my ac compressor out (takes r12 and dont fell like spending a G on converting it) and put an alternator there and not worry about it connecting to my factory wiring harness. Not high on my list to do, but if this is the only way for a fact that it wont mess anything up, i guess its my only way to go. Anyone that has experince with H.O. alternators, or knows a lot about them please let me know in what you think.

That was wat it was gonna cost my friend to convert his 92 suburban. With gas prices out here being 3.55 a gallon, i would spend that 500 getting there and back. so do you think i have to worry about fire?

Those mechanics are idiots.

I wouldn't call them mechanics if I heard some shit like that.

If they even had a clue how an alternator works, you would have never posted this question. Seriously, do not EVER take your vehicle there again!

I do all the work on my on truck. I figured they were just trying to scare me. But i had to make sure that they were not right and that i have nothing to worry about.
