Need 12" Sub Help. Replacing 2 13OV.2's

Recommended Posts

I have these 2 subs in a 2 cube sealed box. My amp is a JBL 1200.1 I'd like to keep this box as it uses my trunk space very well.

Before these subs, I had an 12" Brahma in a 2 cubic foot vented box that aboslutely slaughter. Sadly it was stolen and by then Adire was long gone.

Keeping my current sub and box, what pair of 12's would you all recommend? $250 each would be a reasonable max. Less is even better.

For the power you have, the space you'll be using, and the price you want to stay around it seems like the SSA Icons or the Fi Qs would be a good fit. They both get outstanding reviews by people who use them. With the volume you'll have in the enclosure a little polyfill might improve the lowend a bit.

I just ran out to the car and made several measurements. If I push all my spaces to the max, I can squeeze out 3.5cubes internal while still not losing any of my important space (can still fit groceries and get to spare tire. I could possibly fit a single 15 in there or a single 12 ported.

I have always preferred the sound of sealed boxes myself. Assuming you want to use the same budget and amp, 3.5cubes+1 15+1200watts=BOOM! If $500 is your budget you can afford a really nice 15 and still have enough for new box materials. The 2 12s may displace a little more air because of increased surface area...however(assuming sealed) the 12s in a relatively small enclosure(1 cube each) probably won't go as low as a single 15 with a large enclosure. I run a single 15 sealed(TC Sounds TC3K) and I really love the sound. A lot depends on your music preference and listening habits as well.

Rap and Rock. Deep, tight bass is what I love. SPL is great as long as its not boomy. I like have a headache from my system and haven't felt that since I lost my Brahma.

I could build a sealed and ported box for the 15. Sealed first cause that may be enough.

I just need to decide the 15. The Fi Q and Icon seem very similar. I have 1200 watts at my disposal so I'm sure I can feed either of them.

Question now is whats louder? Sealed Fi Q15 in 3cubes or Ported Fi Q12 in roughly 2 cubes. (Ported box would have to be smaller since it would have to be a simple rectangle).

Can the 12 be made to play as deep or deeper than the sealed 15?

If we assume the output level was the same then the edge for SQ would certainly go to the 15. It should hit lower and yeild a smoother response. You mentioned "deep tight bass", that sounds like the benefits of a sealed alignment.

Plus the OOOOH factor of a 15. I've had almost ten 12's in my life. Sealed is probably best anyway since my 1200.1 does not have a subsonic filter.

Now I'm just stuck choosing a 15.

I vote sealed 15 also.

Seems you like sealed anyways.

Id just get a stock 15 Q.

BP power comes with triple soft spiders, and It semi hurts the lowend. Ive had a 12 with both type of spiders and I like the stock better.

3 cubes internal volume, add bracing and woofer displacement should get you right where you need to be...You should consult the guys at Fi, they will know best.
