NEED SUGGESTIONS FOR EXTREME HIGHS AND MIDS SETUP

Recommended Posts

Ok so i have been doing a lot of research for the past 3 months on my plans for a setup. i decided that i am going to go with 4 18"Fi SSD in a blowthrough enclosure designed by peter kulicki (still designing) with a Sundown 3000D (still saving up for it). but my dad told me my subs are going to kill my highs.

currently have 4 kicker 6x9s doing the work but i am looking for some suggestions on an extreme setup for some highs in my single cab. by extreme i mean i want way more than a set of comps and tweeters. any help will be appreciated

if you wanna check out some pics of my truck you can check it out here!!

well, i see your 6x9s are behind your seat so they gotta go since ur getting a blow through or they'll be in the way.

Here are some ideas\options-

Install horns by Image Dynamics under your dash on each side. These are for your higher frequencies. The better ones you get by them, the louder they will be, simply put. The CD2s are.... according to specs, hella loud.

The only thing else you would need is midbass drivers.

You can install a couple, one in each door then possibly add more behind the seats in the corners of the truck, mounted up high... wherever you want to back there really.

Also, since you own a truck, it doesn't take as much power to get loud compared to a car or SUV because your cabin area is a lot smaller.

you gonna have to wait for JimJ, Dave Brooks, ///M5, Johnecon2001 to come on here to answer the "imaging" part of horns. They recommended them to me for my upcoming install as i have never owned them before.

I do know that they are specifically designed to be mounted under the dash on each side so the sound rolls up, contours with the dash.

The CD2s are going for $470 plus shipping.

They are 109Db efficient at 1w. They only handle 30w so that saves you a lot of money on amps.

But just the efficiency part of it, horns are the loudest they get from my research.

You can go find you some 200w tweeters but their efficiency isnt as high so not as loud.

Oh and those HLTs that some companies make, they(the guys i mentioned above) told me not to use those as they peak like crazy so sound quality is gonna be up and down up and down in their playable frequency range.

Are you actually concerned about staging or is this just to provide something other than subbass? Usually most "highs and mids" threads I see aren't terribly concerned with the realism of the soundstage...but as stated before, HLCD's are really the best bet. Other names to look into are Illusion Audio, USD...but they're all going to be roughly around that price new, or you could try to find a pair on DIYMA or ECA, they come up every now and then. If you just find the horn bodies, you can buy the drivers seperately from Parts Express, they sell Radian 1.4" compression drivers that work with ID or the other horns.

no im not concerned about staging i was just wondering how that would sound with the horns facing the floor. yea i just dont want the bass clearing out the music

Depends on the flooring and how steep on an angle you'll be point them.

While obviously not an optimal angle for them to be in, you'll still get a decent amount of sound out.

It won't be pretty, but it'll be loud.

you dont aim them towards the floor... the horn goes parallel to the floor with the opening/flare facing towards your knees/shins...common placement for your midbass drivers is at the base of your front seat facing upwards and helps direct the high frequencies upwards toward your head... resulting in a pretty good soundstage. in that area u could do 2 or 3 6.5" or even a pair of 8"midbass drivers to give you plenty midbass output to keep up with the 18's and the horns... a good set of horns and midbasses can keep up with 8 12" subs assuming you have the power to make it go.

Not trying to be able to hear into your 30's are you? Keeping up will really depend on your definition, by mine you'd be deaf shortly by yours it may be different.

You talk about budget, but do realize that realistically you should put 2-3x your budget in your front stage versus your subs if you truly desire it to keep up and more importantly sound good. Those horns are cheap once you understand the reality of things, it is the subs and your desire for unecessarily overboosted bass that is costing you money.

As for what else you can do, really not much. If you have that much bass the only thing really that will keep up are horn loaded drivers.
