Hello, I currently Have a Fi 18" BTL fully loaded, and have the opertunity to trade for a SI 15" Mag and possibly a Ed NINe.1. I know the sound is very install dependent, but would I notice an increase in sound quality? Also would the Mag be able to come anywhere close the SPL of a btl? I would probably run it in a 3-4 cuft box tuned to 33hz, or purchase a second mag and run it in a 5 cuft sealed box, each sub has a 2.5cu ft chamber.

The mag will ultimately sound better than the BTL, hands down. You won't be near the output of the BTL though (it's an SPL woofer).

I would skip that Elemental Designs amp though, those things are complete garbage.

Will the mag still be loud? I know the BTL is a SPL sub but I hear everywhere the mag is a loud sub that sounds good doing it, and I would only run the ED untill I bought a second mag.

Not sure about "sounding good doing it". That install sounded like ass. But when I heard them sealed...amazing.

To me, anything's going to sound like ass at that volume. Sound quality involves having subbass that blends well with the front stage, and unless you're trying to fill Wembley Arena 150dB is just way too much.

Just a question of where your priorities lie...my point was that in an SPL-oriented install the Mag will get up there. But while you can have a woofer that does well for both, trying to get both at the same time is impossible.

The last generation will, although if sound quality's what you're after they don't need anywhere near that.

The SPL install I mentioned was sending them about 2.5kW, but that wasn't recommended for everyday use

hehe, im guessing that was my setup, and it was tuned into the upper 60s and i dont even think you heard it play anything other than the tones....

Mags can get loud and sound good doing it. Pretty much all you can say, and i would probably know i have had about 10 mags pass through my hands in the last 2 years lol

The new Mag is not designed for over 1000 watts nor does it require over 1000 watts in any circumstance that I can imagine (within reason) to sound extremely good. The new version is an SQ driver above everything else and was not made to "soak up" more power than it needs. And again, this isn't a bad thing for what this Mag was made to do -- it simply doesn't NEED any more than 1000 watts for it's intended application, accurate music reproduction, so was not designed with more than that in mind.

This is not to say you can't use a 1200-watt amp on the sub, just use care when setting the gain so you don't damage it.

The previous generation Mag will handle 1200 watts without issue. If you want a sub to throw 1200 watts on pretty much constantly then the previous generation is probably better for you. It has a massive voice coil and plenty of mechanical clearances for this type of use. I test SAZ-3000Ds at 1/2 ohm on my pair of "old" Mags on a regular basis.

I did a 144.8 sealed on the dash with a single Mag 15 on a SAZ-1500d out of a trunk car, and it sounded awesome while doing it.

Thanks for the reply's guys - they were all spot-on.

1200 watts on a previous Mag 15 is just fine. Can it sound good? Yes. Can I get it insanely loud with 2k watts and a fart box? Yes. Will it sound good in the fart box? No.

Just like Stratus said - mid 140's from a single Mag isn't un-common...all while still sounding better than anything else out there.
